My new GAP 6.5x47 Lapua build.
  • Bighorn arms TL-2 short action STD bolt face
  • Bartlien #27 barrel (GAP#7) threaded and 6 straight flutes
  • AICS 2.0 in BLK LH
  • Nightforce ATACR 5-25x56 MIL-R
  • Jewell Trigger set to 1.5lbs
  • Bighorn 20 moa base
  • Nightforce med 6-hole rings

This is my first rifle build, I started collecting the parts in feb of 2013 and received the finished product in early nov 3 days before ND whitetail opener. I did not build this rifle as a "hunting" rifle , but i thought what the heck and decided to total the 17lb beast around for the season. With only 3 days before season and no load worked up I rushed to throw a load that i could achieve acceptable accuracy with. I decided on the 140 berger hunting VLDs with 37.5gr of RL 17 powder moving at an average of 2615fps. Two days before the end of season I had a a great opportunity on a fairly respectable whitetail buck. I ranged him at 498 yards and made a good hit on him and down he went. The next morning my dad and I hunted the same area. He wanted to take my rifle for a test drive filling his doe tag. Instead a coyote showed himself and ranged at 225 yards a chip shot for most shooters. I will continue to keep this load on hand for hunting purposes, but i do plan on trying the Lapua 123gr scenars with RL 15 (I cant seem to find any 15 right now) The cold weather up here in ND and being away at college has prevented me from really spending some good quality time with this rifle. Last sunday it finally got warm enough (35 degrees) to be outside and take a few shots. I loaded up 25 fresh rounds and headed out to my buddy's pasture , because all other places I shoot are blocked with snow. A slight 5mph cross wind I was able to hit 5 one gallon jugs at 452 yards with all first round hits. I have about 50 rounds down the tube so far and I absolutely LOVE this rifle.

Thanks for reading

sam

Nice set-up! Man, that's a great first build. GAP knows how to build um. To heck with the weight - carry the rifle you want when hunting! I hunted elk with a 19lb 338LM for several years in Colorado.

looks great! I am currently gathering parts for my 6.5x47 build. Do you know if they modified your firing pin at all on your big horn action?

I don't believe they did, they never mentioned anything about the firing pin.

I was going to ask the same thing. I am currently trying to pick an action for a custom 6.5x47 build. A lot of people have mentioned that their bolt requires the firing pin to be bushed, but of the few 6.5x47 builds on a bighorn that I have been able to find, no one has mentioned anything about the primer cratering problem.

I was wondering if you have done any load testing, and if so, have you noticed any cratering problems.

Nice photos by the way, can't wait to be back in ND for a hunting season.

Bighorns action have a small firing pin, no modification needed.

OP, nice build!

I have two Bighorns, one in .260 Rem and one in 6.5x47. Both carry Kreiger 25" med. Palma tubes, McMillian A-5 adjustable stocks PTG bottom metal and Jewell triggers. They were built by Beanland. I just finished working up loads for the 6.5. Five shot groups stay in the .3-.4 MOA range with a variety of bullets. I have settled on the 123 Lapua with Varget. I get 2945 fps with no primer cratering. The Bighorn has a small firing pin in a close fitting hole. If you are cratering primers on a Bighorn your pressure is high. Both rifles weigh about 12 lbs without scope. They just shoot great. You can't go wrong with a Bighorn action or a Beanland build. Now go out and shoot.
