I was always told that 308 and 7.62 were the same as far as compatibility in a 308 rifle. The other day I picked up a box of 7.62, and when I got home I noticed it had "For M1a" stamped on the box. Why would this be? and is it still compatible with my 308 Rem?

Yes, it works fine in .308 rifles. As I understand it, the NATO designation for .308 Win (7.62x51) is the opposite of the NATO designation for .223 (5.56x45) ammo. You can shoot 7.62 ammo in a .308, but shouldn't shoot .308 ammo in a 7.62 chambered rifle.

The ammo you have is specifically designed to function in a M1A, but worked fine in my .308 AR and bolt action rifles. Have fun with it.

The M1A and the Garand require a specific powder burn rate to avoid damaging the op-rod. Using a powder too slow will create excess pressure at the gasport and can cause damage. If a particular type of ammo is ok in either of those guns it will be fine in a bolt gun or even another gas gun like the AR10 types. On the other hand using your highest velocity handload in an M1 or M1A can be bad.....

Port pressure is the concern... operating rods can be damaged in an m1a if care isn’t taken in choosing your ammo, they are just saying the ammo is safe for that rifle type. It will be safe to use in your 308 too.

shucks... biffj beat me.
