Load development in a Box

So i wanted to take my load development to the range with me. Basically, find some promising loads and load up a few more on the spot to test. Figured it would save time and gas money going back and forth just to shoot a few test loads. I wanted a way to throw everything I'm going to need in one container and use that. Be able to throw it in the back seat or the bed of the truck and just go. So this is what i came up with. I call it Load Dev in a box.

I picked up a cheap Lee Single Stage press some cheap lumber and some drawer latches. So for less than $50 with most of that being the press i made the following. This isn't my finest wood work, as my miter saw isn't big enough to cut the boards i was using in one pass and i was having trouble with some of the boards cracking/splitting.

The base is 1X12X26 (1inch on each end so a clamp can be used to fasten it to the bench)
The top is 1x12x24
The sides are 1x10x whatever was required.

The press is screwed directly into a board running vertical to give it the most support. Zero flex in it. I don't think i would try to FL resize with this setup but for just seating bullets it's fine.

As a side note, I use micrometer head seating dies for all my rifle calibers, so adjusting the die from my rock chucker to this is no big deal.

With the cut for the press and the door on, the handle of the press can only move about 1/8" the way I've got it setup.

Everything in the next picture fits in the box with plenty of room to spare. You just can't see it all in the previous picture. That's a lyman Gen 6 powder dispenser that is about 9" long and 4-5" wide. I think you can get it in there with the powder hopper installed, but it'd be a tight fit.

There's room behind the support for the press to fit a pound of powder. A 1lb can of RL17 will fit upright in the box, it's got about 1/4" of clearance.

I'm going to add a handle on top of some sort and I'm still working on a way to mount the powder thrower. I've got a couple idea's I'm playing with, but will update when i figure it out.

It's not pretty, but it is functional. Figured it's going to get beat up anyway.

Thats legit. Maybe an RCBS 505 for the scale? Vs the electric one so you dont need to worry about batteries.

I've got one of those two. it depends on where i go to shoot. One place i've got electric so i can use the electronic dispenser.

I used it this past weekend. Works great as long as you remember everything ......

I like that set up. Looks like I have a new project to build. I'm thinking a toolbox handle on top would make it easy to carry to and from the truck.

Nice! Although I only live a few miles from my local range, something like this would be sweet for load development. Case prep and priming would be done at home and you'd be set for powder and a bullet on scene. I saw the video that Lowlight did on the Robert Gradous build. Robert's got a dedicated shoot house/reloading set-up all under one roof. That'd be my dream. In the mean time I might have to fire up the saw and make a "reloading room to go".

I like this alot, much easier on the wallet compared to my idea of buying a Kia mini box truck and making a mobile reloading room

looks good. I had a need for this a couple weeks ago, found I could fit everything into a 40mm ammo can very nicely. I have a C-H press that is heavy enough to just sit on the bench for bullet seating, I put some quick grip clamps in the box to secure it but wouldn't resize like that unless I had to. I use a set of lee dippers to throw a light charge, and trickle up on my beam scale

Yeah to me you would almost have to just leave all of that stuff dedicated to in the field work and separate stuff for home so there is no chance of forgetting something. I am lucky in the my in laws have 70 acres and live 1/2 hour away from me. That and I am poor so I don't own a lot of guns so I don't do much load development.

My local range is generally so windy I'd have a hard time weighing a charge within 1 grain... There is generally about 1 hour of good (nearly) wind free shooting right as the range opens. I like to use that time shooting. But, I really like the idea of the box all the same.

Wouldn't it just be easier to work up as many different loadings as you want and bring them all to the range to test, rather than driving back and forth, as you say, or loading at the range.

I am sorry, this just seems backwards to me.

Depends if you like pulling bullets and or wasting components. Think if you hit pressure signs 2 or 3 loads before your max, or groups start opening up or you're changing COAL and seem to be headed the wrong way. Idk I like the idea of it and the range is only 15 mins from me.

Not something I would be interested in; I would just bring a lot of different loadings. But to each their own.

I used setups like this before I had a range in the backyard.

Yes that works, I've done it many many times, but the idea with this is you take your loads, invariably there will be 1 or 2 that shoot better than the rest or maybe you screwed up and blew a group that could have showed promise. Be really easy to take a few minutes and go load a handful more of the ones that show promise and shoot them again. Saving a range trip. Where you may have to wait for decent weather, scheduling w/e. This way you can get it all done in one day and not spread out over several days/weeks/months. Then you know for sure it's a load you want to shoot, so you can go ahead and make more at home.

I have been thinking about doing this for years. I guess I need to haul off and just do it. The only thing that concerns me is that it's windy as hell most of the time where I live. I don't know how I would get a scale to act right unless I put it in some sort of box.

if I had to drive to a range for load dev. I would most def do this. I get annoyed when I have to drive back to the top of the hill and load more test rounds. I have thought so many times how frustrating it must be. I am thankfull. one of those tuned 505's and a receiver mount for your press and that's really all ya need. calipers/comparator. anyway this would be a must.

Nice idea.

I like my portable Harrels press and another reason I like a wilson chamber type seater. You can put weighed charges in film canisters or cases with ear plugs stuck in em and seat bullets as you need them. I have a 750 yard range pretty handy so its not too big a deal for me. I been working on a load last few days. Hopefully tomorrow it will be finaized. Never had to work on one so hard. And i'm not trying to chase .1's and .2's just trying to break under 1 MOA. And I think I found one to do about .25. I will confirm tomorrow. I like the idea of this box. My box is usually several boxes.

Great thinking and design OP!!!
