For my b-day I received a Nightforce 5.5x22 Mil/Mil scoped. My question, while I still have the ability to exchange it, should I do it and try to get a FPP mil/mil scope? I was thinking about exchanging it for one of the Bushnell Elite series or Vortex HD series. Thanks

You don't NEED a FFP if:

You are target shooting
You are shooting at known distances
You are dialing your adjustments on the turrets
You always use your electronic rangefinder

You should probably get a FFP if:

You use the reticle to calculate range
You use the reticle for holdovers/adjustments on the fly
You like to not have to remember retarded half of a half of a quarter of a half formulas to make your reticle useable for holdovers
You want to use the optic in magnification powers other than the 'set for reticle' power the scope has; this may be important if you have a high magnification optic and the magnification for your reticle to 'work' is either high making mirage an issue, or low making your higher power end a bit useless as far as the reticle

An why were we thinking of exchanging it?
was typing this, oh I agree with the German 100% but I would only say, only buy ffp if you are competing in comps

Currently I am learning the fundamental of long range shooting, much of my shooting is currently targets at a known distance. However, with a limited budget, I would like to get a scope that would allow me to expand to comps if the opportunity arise. It sounds like a FFP scope would be a better choice. If FFP, are there a major difference between the Bushnell ERS/SRS vs. Vortex HD?

I would recomend FFP if you are looking to expand to running comps, etc. I started some years back into the long range game with a NF NXS. Great scope, but changed to FFP due to I felt it suited my wants and needs for comps and the occasional hunting.

If you have the scope in hand, just go out and shoot, its excellent, bombproof for want of better words, learn the basics and go from there. As your skills improve and if you start entering comps think of going to ffp.

If he will need a FFP scope, why not do it now?

OP, glass isn't too expensive. Buy two more NFs, a minimum of five bushnells, a vortex and replace the windshield on your vehicle.

If you feel that a FFP scope would be better suited for your task, then I would probably agree with you. I think most long range scopes should be in FFP.

Agree with exchanging it. Nothing against the NF NXS, but I was under-whelmed with it when I shot it. And aside from the whole ranging debate - the ability of an FFP scope to allow you to calculate POI/POA corrections in any magnification and use holdovers in any magnification in itself justifies the extra cost. FFP is quickly becoming the standard and honestly they are not that much more expensive than the same SFP scope.

The OP should be able to get into a nice FFP scope with the $2000+ he will get from the refund or exchange. Do it now before you get the urge to mount it.

Thanks for all the input guys, I am going to exchange it for a FFP type scope.

The military uses a nightforce and you can still range with the reticle and use holdovers but only on certain powers nightforce scopes are the toughest out there remember that before you go out and buy a brand that was once known for how shitty there scopes were secondly ffp scopes can sometimes cover your target up once you get to the power setting you need to even see it. I hate them for hunting and when you want to use low power the reticle is usually too damn small to see keep the nightforce that'll last you a lifetime and go shoot I know several people that shoot comps with a nightforce if you're not a dumb ass it's not bad at all

For $2000 Mile High Shooting has Vortex Razor HD 5-20X with 35mm Suphr mount with built in level. EBR-2B reticle can't be beat. FFP, great optics, mil/mil with 10 mil turrets. You won't need anything else for a long time. Lifetime, transferrable, no fault warranty, if you happen to run over it with your truck. You won't be disappointed!

I totally agree with the above post. I'd keep the NightForce. The one you have is my favorite over any of my FFP scopes that include Vortex and Leupold.

Keep the Nightforce. Range at maximum magnification. Don't trade down to a lesser, not as rugged scope.
