I'm in the market for a new truck. I've got a damn good offer on mine a 2012 ford f-250. And with the new announcement of a new body style last week I'm gonna move it before I take a big hit next year. The 250 is a sled and I've gotten stuck quite a bit with some of the places I hunt and shoot and my old man and brother have jeeps and do a bit of trail runs so I would like to join in. and I'm looking at a new raptor it would fit the bill of off-road truck/ sport scar all in one. Or getting a used jeep and doing a scrambler conversion. I'm gonna test drive it Monday. But I'm probably gonna have to live with it for the better part of a decade. Any info would be much appreciated

I have been eyeballen one of those for a while now DAMN KIDS ! spending all my money on them.. FUCK IT! I'm just going to give them a lesson in irresponsibility and buy one... I have an old f150 2002 I love it ill drive it till it dies

I have two family members who have Raptors and they are both happy. They however do little actual off road driving. If you watch carefully at the dealer you may notice that the graphic on the side is actually a quite expensive option. While neither of my Raptor driving family members is pinching pennies they both opted to do without the graphic. So before you go to buy the truck have it fixed in your mind how much the Raptor Graphic is worth to you.

They are a pretty tough truck. That get around good off road and the seats are by far the most comfortable seats in a truck.

I've got a 2013 Raptor with the Supercrew cab. Straight up, it's the baddest truck I've ever driven.

Pros:
- Tons of power and torque. You will blow past anything on the road and chew up hardpack trails.
- Very comfortable ride. My wife actually prefers the Raptor for roadtrips.
- Versatile. There's very little you can't do with this truck: offroad, tow, or crush inclement weather.
- Fantastic resale/trade-in value. I've had the dealer I bought it from last year call me twice and offer 125% of KBB. Probably should have taken it, but like you, I buy a truck and drive it until the wheels fall off. I'll have this truck a long time, and god willing, I'd love to give this beast to my kid in 20 years.

Cons:
- Gas guzzler. I get about 14 mpg overall.
- Tough to get a "good deal." Raptors are in high demand so you're not going to get much haggle room with most dealerships.
- If you do a lot of city driving, parking garages are not your friend. Most of the parking garages in DC are 6'6" and under, and my Raptor will not fit. You need to have at least 6'8" clearance.
- Make sure you get the full upgrade package. You want the 36ga tank or else you're going to be filling up all the time.

Get it all black, no graphics, as the good Lord intended and don't look back.

Well the good deal is its all black got the upgrade package etc. my truck now is a diesel it gets 12-14 mpg already so with gas being .50 cheaper at the moment then that's a bonus. the great deal is my uncle owns the dealership so I get everything at dealer cost. No haggle. Been thinking about it the last six months and my uncle got one in last week. He called me the other day and told me I need to move on it due to the new body style. and had a guy looking for the truck I drive now. I was about to have to do the 40k mile tune up and put new tires on mine. So that saves me $2500 so it's a no brainer.

I am only getting 14mpg on my 2013 F150 Screw with the 3.5l TT ecoboost so that out of a Raptor is a no brainer. I love it none the less.

Dang you got a lead foot? That sounds pretty low for an ecoboost.

Unfortunately no. I drive the truck with an economy mindset... I think it has a lot to do with the winter mix fuel that we have here in the NE. Back in September it was much better. I am kind of curious what it does once the warm weather comes back around.

I'de be glad to bet that you are correct. Ethanol has a lot less energy per gallon than Gasoline has. Also if you are using 4wd that sucks a bunch. So does driving through snow.

Ah, gotcha...yeah forgot about the crap winter fuel blend...mine dropped by about 2-3 mpg because of it.

I'd be furious if I had an Ecoboost and it was getting 14mpg. I'd tell anyone that wants a Raptor to get it now; I wouldn't want my truck with an aluminum body if that's the way they decide to go. If it's going to take serious offroad punishment, I want all steel. If it were a work truck that I was just trying to save money on, then I'd feel differently. You honestly feel like the god of the road in a Raptor.

My dad's got one, and it is straight badass. Only con I would say is the mpg and size if you have a small garage or something. It's his favorite car so far, and he has owned some cool ones (Porsches, pantera, etc.). Says he gets more compliments on the Raptor than his pantera. Also, the interior really is nice. You can nearly lay down and stretch out in the back, I think it's like 6" wider than the regular f-150. Great truck.

It's a Ford. Buy the Toyota. Enough said.

Steped on a toe or two there didn't I....btw, my family fought in all the wars beginning with the Revolutionary....but Id still buy a Toyota, or a Mercedes.

Like any other engine with substantial power, it's all in how you drive it. The wife's Flex has the 3.5L EcoBoost; I can get about 20% better fuel economy than she normally gets.

I'd tell anyone that wants a Raptor to get it now; I wouldn't want my truck with an aluminum body if that's the way they decide to go.

I bet the new aluminum body ends up stronger than the outgoing steel; my '08 Super Duty has some very thin body panels in certain areas. I'd also be very excited about the idea of a vehicle that could go 10-15 years in the Salt Belt without looking like some WWII relic that'd be dragged out of the ocean.

There is no way I'd spend $45K to buy a F150 that averages 14MPG. I love my sled, F250 Diesel 4x4, and I filled up this morning, 17.6MPG. If you want a trail rig, but a Jeep or Toyota.

ETA: I'd love to have an Al body. Hard Anodize it, and never worry about the finish chipping, peeling, rusting, small dings, etc.

Love it...........

Purchased a used 2011 Raptor 6.2 super crew in June of '12. This one had literally only seen a cow pasture or two in it's previous owner's possession. It's had a baptism in off road since I've owned it. Plain oxford white, no graphics, all options except for the moonroof. I got exactly what I wanted with a clean slate to work with. Daily driver and hunting rig. Pulls the Polaris and trailer as if nothing were behind it. Average about 15 mpg going to work and such, road trips I've seen as good as 17, but again, it all depends on keeping your foot out of it, which is hard to do with all the available power. Aftermarket wheels, O/R lighting and a matte black hood wrap are the only mods done so far. It is exceptionally capable off road, in nasty river bottom mud engage 4x4, lock the rear diff, just push it down and go. The stock BFG's lack "bite" in our particular terrain, but they suffice.

I love my 2013 Land Rover LR2. Best ride on trails of any 4X4 with great stock stereo, Bluetooth and NAV. 19.2 mpg with 80% city driving and about 24 mpg on hwy. Peppy 2L turbo charged engine new for 2013. What's not to like? About $46,000.

One day, a Raptor will sit in the driveway.
As for fuel economy, I currently drive a 1997 F-150 with a 4.6l engine. I get 14mpg mixed highway/city.
Last week I was TDY and rented a 3.5l eco-boost F-150. It got 13.4mpg, mixed highway/city (from the cool digital dashboard gauge) .
To say I was stunned at the poor gas mileage would be an understatement!

The Raptor is a badass truck but a trail rig it is not. It's made to go really fast in wide open terrain. Buy a cheap Wrangler for the trails.

I bet the new aluminum body ends up stronger than the outgoing steel;

ding ding ding, winner. As long as they use some of the newer hardened aluminum's that are out the aluminum will be STRONGER than steel and last much longer. A lot of the aftermarket Jeep armor is going to aluminum for weight savings and its proving to be just as durable as steel at 1/4 of the weight. Most of the company's making the aluminum stuff are using high grade hardened aluminum though, not cheap.

We shall see. Alot of y'all have a lot more faith in the 1.0 products than I do. I wouldn't want to be the guy who buys the aluminum Raptor and gets to do the real testing that Ford didn't want to spend the money to do. In 10 years, I'm sure whatever they're calling the Raptor will be badass, but I sure as hell wouldn't buy the first year's offering for anything if I could still get a steel body.

If Ford uses the right aluminum I have no fear that it will be stronger and far lighter than a steel truck. If they dont use the right aluminum, who knows.

I have a 2012 Raptor. I got the white with no graphics. I really like it, it is my favorite truck on the road and I have driven them all. Being in the construction industry we go thru company trucks quickly. My company truck for the longest time was a 2007 DOdge Ram 2500. It did fine but it was loud and drive like shit on the highway. I then went to a 2009 Chevy Tahoe. It constantly had problems but once we figured out the cause it was good to go. I traded it in for the Raptor. I am constantly off road for my job and there has not been much that can stop it. I have been in creeks, mud, sand, snow, ice, and limestone rock quarries. Has the most comfortable interior of any truck I have been in and the Sync system is great to have if you travel a lot.

The only downsize is the fuel consumption. It drinks the gas! I wish they offered the Raptor with a 6L Diesel engine. That would be the baddest truck on the planet! Heavier transmission and it would be unstoppable. :)

I'm currently standing at a distribution hub, surrounded by trailers that carry 42,000 pounds of cargo each and every day for about 14 years. Anyone want to guess what structural material is used?

Aluminum body panels are also not exactly new to the auto industry.

Toyota In Action

and no, I've never owned a Toyota

I love my 2013 white raptor, the most fun truck I've ever driven. But for your purposes, their not the best on jeep trails because of their 90" width. Amazing what they will do in open high speed desert terrain though..

Love it to death. General driving is great on and off road. I do a great deal of rough dirt road (extended) driving and this truck really takes the bumps out.

First tank of gas.........9.5mpg

Avg:
11.5 city
14.5 short trip
16.5 long trip

From my perspective (Ford Senior Master Technician with 13 years at Ford), I have never seen a mechanical problem on a Raptor that was not caused by the customer. They are solid. The only one's I've seen with a problem was a 350 lb. customer broke the heated seat element, the other blew up a rear end while entered in a sanctioned desert race in Nevada. The only thing stopping me from getting one is that it is too tall to fit in my garage.

Get the raptor and don't look back. I'm enjoying the hell out of mine. Gas mileage does suck though...

I bought the first or second Raptor that came into my dealer in 2010. So long ago, it had the 5.4L V-8 engine. I now have about 45K on it. Only had one problem and that was last week when a tranny connector started leaking a bit. Fixed under warrant because there was a TSB on it. Othewise, I love the truck. Won't fit in my garage but that's ok. We drive it more than the wife's Caddy. She says it's more comforable over a long haul. Mileage isn't too bad, drive it back and forth to work about 50 miles round trip and get about 13-14 in the summer and about 13 in the winter (live in DFW and they have an EPA mixture for summer and winter).

Had it off road and in the mud every deer season and so far, nothing has stopped it. Best think so far is that I was just looking at new Raptors and was offerred just what I paid for it new 4 1/2 years ago. Never had a truck that appreciated before this one. I do have the decal package and the ladies love the look!

Still the best truck I have ever owned bar none. Funny story, I was stopped at a light and saw a guy leaning out of his Civic beside me. Didn't know what he was doing leaning so far out of his window. Then he fell out of his car and his cell phone came with him. He was leaning out the window taking pictures of my baby! Laughed until I cried!

I had a 2012, and put 40k miles on it in about 13 months. It was the best truck I have ever had, and it got me out of many pickles in the field, at Rifles Only (where I almost flipped it with a cabful of green berets and a secret service guy...the pucker factor was high), at the beach. The fuel consumption, however, was absolutely terrible. Sold it and bought a sedan, which is much more sensible for my line of work. I miss that truck everyday.

That’s horrible. I’m getting:

18mpg at 80mph

20.5mpg at 65mph

16.8mpg in mixed city driving

And I have a bunch of work done. It makes 400hp/518tq at the tires, runs high 12’s (as far as I know the most powerful EB F-150 on the planet) and runs on 33x12.50’s.

It got better mileage when it was stock.

As for Raptors I think they are great trucks. A few friends have them. I just can’t deal with the horrible mileage and they are turd slow. That said I have a buddy that has one with a 2.9L Whipple on it that makes 550/550 at the wheels. That sucker is a rocket. Still gets horrible mileage though. And the blower isn’t cheap.

My buddy Joe has one (he is hiding on here somewhere....) and its bad ass. If you have the money and like trucks, get it.

To the guy that recommended Toyota:

I'm a Toyota guy. They have historically made the most reliable trouble free trucks. My 89, 99, and current 04 (230k miles with minimal maintenance) have been bomb proof and put up with my abuse very well. That being said, Toyota in general and the Tundra in particular have become too Americanized. They are becoming junk just like Garbage/Government Motors and Dodge. My next truck will be another Tacoma. If I was in the market for a half ton, it would be an F150. If I needed a diesel, once again I'd get a Ford. We have a fleet of Ford Diesels at work and they hold up very well, except for the 6.0's that we have phased out. The Dodge trucks that we had before, not so much. The older ones (04 and older) require $1000's a year in maintenance.

I wouldn't even consider buying a GM on principle alone. They took 50 billion in bailout money and we'll never get 10 billion of that back. Where is my free truck for use of my tax money?

Dodge, well I've seen enough silly failures that should not have happened that I couldn't see buying something that unreliable. Backing out of a driveway and having the steering shear off of a truck that doesn't see any hard use, for example. Transmissions going out regularly, the known dash crack issue that Dodge didn't bother addressing for 10 years or so.

Anyways, that's my rant. To the OP, I think you'll be happy with the Raptor. I have a couple friends with F150's and they have been good trucks. One of those friends is going to get the new model Raptor that is coming out this year. They are ungodly expensive.
