Hello all, New guy here trying to break into the long range shooting game and heard this is a good place to learn. little bit, about myself...... I have been shooting since I was old enough to hold a rifle, had/have the prerequisite bb/pellet rifles and currently I own a number of rifles for my shooting pleasure. Right now my go to long range, at least it is long range to me as I don't have easy access to anything above 200 yds, is a savage model 10 FCP-k in .308. with a Leatherwood scope sitting on a 20 MOA EGW base. I really have it in my mind that I NEED to get a Remington 700 XCR Longe Range in .300 win. mag..... Have been in love the the darn things since first laying eyes on one a couple of years ago, and I finally may have the funds to make said purhase in the very near future if I can find one for sale at a reasonable price. Does anyone have experience with this particular model? Would I be better suited getting something else.....would like opinions from those way more knowledgable than I....... I do reload, as a matter of fact the more I shoot the savage, the better equipment I keep buying to increase the precision of my reloads...... never ending chase for perfection....LOL...... anyway...what say all of you?

Personally, I am in the same shoes as you rbshoots.
I am doing a Remington 700 SPS V and will upgrade the stock and trigger as money allows. The X-Ray by KRG will be my stock replacement, a timney 510 trigger and then the optic selection will be based on each persons needs/preferences.

Your Savage should serve you well out to 1000 yards.

The .308 isn't the IDEAL round for 1000 yards but probably is one of the most common rounds for >/= 1000 yards.

What will you be shooting at past 1000 yards (hunting, paper punching, competitions)? The 300 Win Mag you are considering is a very good option but there are many other calibers that are more ballistically efficient and can get you there with less recoil and would be cheaper to reload (allowing you to shoot more).

well eventually I would like to work out to 1200-1500 and shoot steel That would be my primary goal I guess.......I really should stick with a good ole .30-06.....I have been reloading for my Win Model 70 for as long as I can remember and have tons of experience with that cartridge...... I guess I am getting magnum fever for no other reason than I just want one.....from a practicality stand point, I would agree my .308 should serve me well, but I would like a good heavy barrel rifle that I can shoot out to 1500 yds or so if I choose to. I know I would really enjoy shooting at distance....the physics and math and working up a firing solution really appeal to me..... Think I would like the challenge shooting at steel at distance would bring......
