Remaction:

It is the Tail of the Dragon. Says so in the 'long' link that shows the video. One of the camera dudes who sets up to take pictures on the tough corners supposedly distracted the rider who then went wide. Bad riding... bad day. Idiot should have been watching the road, not mugging for a camera. I rode that stretch in April 1992... on a trip from the Texas Gulf to Fayetteville, NC. Shiny new Harley. I think it was in April. But it was long before that stretch of road turned into the circus that it is today. There is, apparently, now a tree on one end of it that has bike parts from all the crashes hanging from its branches. A friend showed me a photo of it a couple of years ago. I remember it as a challenging bit of road that I took really slow (I was tired and it was late afternoon) and even with no traffic on it at all, it was a road not to be trifled with. Now it's an adrenaline highway and I hear that the ambulances run all weekend, every weekend picking up the organ donors.

I was on a worse (actually better since windy roads are always 'better' for motorcyclists) road about 3 years ago out in California. CA 178 past Lake Isabella and then down 155 to Delano. One of the passes through the Sierra Nevada. I was there in late-October on a week day going between Death Valley and on up to Visalia. The road was utterly abandoned/empty in late morning. But judging by the skid marks all over the road, there is plenty of sport bike carnage there on weekends. Another road that I highly recommend for riders... who have respect for the laws of physics. There was a great little country store at the bottom of the twisty section... I was glad it was there as I needed the break!

Cheers,

Sirhr

I recognized it w/o having to look it up. That is Deals Gap (US 129) Not the first moron to claim that "the photographer distracted me".

I have lived in the area since the mid 90s.. I've done Deals Gap (the tail of the Dragon) more times that than I can count. It is a fantastic stretch of tarmac, but it has become a circus, and there are a whole lot of people who ride over their ability there. The first photographer to set up shop there that I know of is Killboy. He's been posting pictures of lane crossers for as long as he's had a website. I've done it in a 89 Chevy Blazer (only one person puked). The first bike I did it on was my '02FXDWG, but only twice, and the second time was just to take someone else there, it is not fun on a HD. The turns are just to tight for a big heavy Harley, and you drag shit way too soon. The fun rides are on my '02 Triumph Speed Triple, and that is a blast, and that ride I do in full Vanson leather (and I stay on my side of the road).

I only go to ride early in the week, never on weekends. The place has become a destination for riders, and most of them see the pictures online of some guy dragging a knee and they have to try push it all the way up/down. The place is 318 turns in 11 miles with a huge elevation changes. There are turns that the locals have given names like "catch all" because if your cranking it you will come out where there is no line to make next one. There are turns that you can get a knee down at 35, and there are blind spots that will hide a tractor trailer. Love the road, hate what it has become.

Edit: At to the lethality, I think the place averages one to three fatalities a yr, that said there are a fair number of people who go down. A whole lot of plastic gets broken up. The tree at the motel at the top is called "the Tree of Shame".

An example of what can happen there is really well illustrated by this little story: Someone on a local board once posted a picture of a chunk of fairing in the tree with "Don't follow the Repsol" scrawled on it in paint pen. Everyone is pretty certain that the "victim" got a bit of testosterone poisoning when he got it into his head that he would run with the 600 that probably passed him. There is a local guy, racer, who used to work at the store at the top of the hill (and may own it now), he rode a Repsol. The Repsol had thousands of trips up and down, and rode it every day for the months of the yr that the place is open. The results would be pretty predictable.

Pike definitely isn't letting his injury get the best of him he is very active in the firearms community and is currently working at PWS. A great example of what a great state I live in, to embrace the sacrifices the military has to endure and make sure they are comfortable and able to do what they love. I just wish the country can recognize the men and women that have served instead of the over paid hypocritical movie stars

How many times have I wanted to do that to the passenger next to me... why is it that I always end up sitting next to some recruiter for a fringe religion or an Amway salesman? It's like a law.

There has to be a back-story there...

Cheers,

Sirhr

Unruly (drunk) passenger coming home from Iceland had his fellow passengers get sick of his shit and they broke out the duck tape.

Did you ever get your Indian that you came over to Maine to get finished?

Got the bottom end of the original motor together. Sheet metal is all bare ready for bodyworking. Picking at it between classes and work. This summer, I'll get it done.

Thanks for asking JBELL!

Cheers,

Nice, throw some pics of it up when you get it all completed. I would love to see it.

Sorry for the interruption everyone else, continue with the nonsense and so on...

You do not need a plow to do that. I was splashing slush laughing like an asshole glancing forward only long enough to not hit cars. I got some lady so hard she lost her groceries. I did feel bad for splashing some lady. Kids are fair game adults I try not to get.

That makes me laugh cause I plow and have always wanted that to happen.

Lots of plowing this year.

i don't plow, but i have a somewhat relating story.

in february '97, i was a jack ass teen, 16 years old, turning 17 very soon. my dad had a ford ranger "splash". we were headed to monroeville mall when i saw an unexpecting hoydy toydy lady getting into her car. ya know, one of the ones that trys soooo hard to be fancy that it is annoying. the weather was about 30*, it had been snowing with the big heavy wet flakes for a few days. puddles and slush everywhere. why on earth she was wearing a mini skirt and stiletto type high heels is beyond me. she also had some sort of a fancy suede type jacket on. anyways, i watched her tip toe thru the slush, trying so desperately not to get her high heels wet. sweetheart, up picked the wrong day to dress fancy. not because of me, but the weather in general. as she was getting into her beemer, i told derek, "hey, watch this!". i speed up and did what any other hillbilly red blooded american teen would do. KA-POW! i went thru the puddle as fast as i could of course. and wouldn't you know, it just so happened to be right where the hoydy toydy lady parked her car. derek was so shocked i soaked this lady he really didn't know what to say. he kinda freaked out, you know the whole, "dude! WTF! i can't believe you did that!" deal. i calmly looked over, and said, "they don't call it a ford splash for nothing". his jaw just dropped.

i kinda feel bad now, but when you are a curious mischievous teen male it was funny.
