***.284 WIN LOADS***

Re: ***.284 WIN LOADS***

58.5gr of H4831SC under a Berger 168gr VLD is getting me 2900 with no pressure signs and excellent accuracy out to 1200 yards. I plan on pointing the bullets from here on out and running them that way.

Re: ***.284 WIN LOADS***

Anyone shooting some 160gr. TSX's out of their 284's? I just got in my barrel for my new Savage and plan on trying out some barnes bullets for my hunting loads, I'll be using RL-17 and shooting out of a 25" barrel.

Re: ***.284 WIN LOADS***

Anybody tried the Berger 175 XLD's (G1 BC: 0.658/G7 BC: 0.336)?

7mm-175gr-XLD.jpg

I just came into some and will probably start with 54 grains of H4831sc and 50.5 grains RE17.

Looking to get these up to 2850 fps.

Re: ***.284 WIN LOADS***

Is anyone shooting the 180 VLDs out of a 26'' barrel in a long action? If so what are your velocities? Also what is everyone seeing for barrel life on your .284? I am deciding between building a .284 or a 7mm Rem Mag and I have read the barrel life on the .284 is around double of the 7mm, will I see much of a difference in barrel life between these two given same barrel length and either 168 or 180 VLDs? Looking for pros and cons of either direction?

Remington 40X single shot, Krieger 5R 1/8 twist, 27" Light Varmint contour, Laminated wood stock bedded by Master Class Stocks, 180 gr SRA MK, 51 gr RE 17, Lapua 6.5x.284 necked up, resized and necks turned for .003 clearance per side, .010 jump, CCI BR2 primers. Been a Master in Long Range prone for about 6 years and first time out made High Master by 10 points. Second time out shot 596 at 800, 900 and 1000 (200, 198, 198) in the rain. Friend spotting for me commented on how flat the trace was. Have not chronographed it, but don't really care how fast it is going when it shoots like that.

Loading up some .284 for the first time and I don't have my OAL gauge yet. So to get an idea of OAL I loaded a bullet long and turned the Redding Micrometer comp die one notch each time and checked it until I could close the bolt. This is my first time reloading .284 and the OAL seems a bit high. Eye balling a bullet next to it looks like it comes down to about the datum line.

Measuring with a Hornady comparator I am taking the measurements off ogive:
6.5x284 Lapua brass
FL sized to .284 win
trimmed to 2.17
180gr Berger Hybrid
From ogive 2.6085
OAL 3.34

I can not close the bolt at 2.609 and Can close the bolt without much effort at 2.6085. Do you think I should just load them at 2.6085 or seat them a little deeper?

I'm using 54.2gr H-4831sc under Berger 180gr VLDs; getting approx 2730 fps through a 28" Bartlein w/ necked up Lapua brass.

I've fired up to 55.5gr H-4831sc and primers were just starting to flatten a bit, still easy extraction.

I'm planning to fire a 100yd OCW test with charges at 54.2, 54.5, 54.8, 55.1, 55.4, 55.7.

Any new data on the 284 and 168 Berger.
26" barrel
2.495 Chamber with Hornady OAL Gauge
running them 2.485

Working up loads now with H4350 and 168 vld's. Ran it all the way up to 54 gr and no pressure signs yet. Best group was around 52.8 gr H4350. Not much info on the 168. Tons on the 180 vld but I have alot of the 168's and would like more info if anyone has it.

Just put a 284 win together. I ordered some Berger 180s to try.

What's your 180 loads?

Looking at h4350, h4831sc, or maybe rl16 if I can find some

New Criterion Remage 30" 1:8 twist. Worked up loads at 30 degrees in winter so I might need to back off this summer.

180 eld .015 off lands. New Winchester brass. CCI LRP.

RL-17: 51gr=2867 SD 2; 51.2 gr=2870 SD 3; 51.4gr=2882, SD 2.8. All 1 small hole groups very similar points of impact. I'm staying with 51.2gr.

RL-26: 55.6gr=2868 SD 4.2; 55.8gr=2876 SD 3; 56gr=2881 SD 4.4. Again 1 hole groups similar point of impact.

I'm gonna run RL-17 as I have a keg left over from my last barrel.

Drops at 5400 feet with 100 yard zero:
300y: 1.1 mils
500y: 2 mils
500 meters: 2.5 mils
700y: 3.6 mils
800y: 4.5 mils
900y: 5.2 mils
1000y: 6.3
1200y: 8.2 mils
1550y: 13.0 mils
1700: 15.0 mils

I called it. Saw some troubling pressure signs with 51.2 gr RL 17 at 95 degrees in the summer. I backed off to 49.5 gr and saw a .32" 4 shot group 2836 fps with a 1.6sd. I also started to get a few loose primer pockets after two firings with the hotter load, maybe 5 or 6 out of 150. Not super loose, still usable.

I just put a 284 Win together trying to test the accuracy of a standard savage action w a match barrel then swap it out for my bighorn and see what the difference does as far as accuracy.

Gun specs are:
Criterion match 28” bull 1-8 RHT
Trigger Basix sac-1 trigger
Oryx (MDT) chassis and mag (3.560)

shooting Berger 180 hybrids (have 180 ELDs and Berger 184 F opens to try next).
RL 17 @ 52.6 gr, Norma brass, BR2s, 3.273” overall length@ a .020” jump only depth tested.

only 63 rounds of load development so bbl is still speeding up. Have 7 rounds of 52.6 for a 3.4 s-d es of 7. I’m waiting on my rail and scope to show up so am shooting what was on the old savage and groups are all sub MOA but should tighten up considerably w/new scope. Velocity is @ 2,894 but will end up faster w more break in. All rounds fired at roughly 5k elevation and 21-32 degrees so haven’t seen any negatives from the RL17 and never shoot above 90 degrees.

I have almost always been a heavy bullet for cartridge guy with as much velocity as I can get but have other 7mms in 28 Nos and Rem Mag so am just looking for a very accurate load that I can utilize brass and barrel life on. I am shooting RL17 and know it’s quite a bit faster than H4350 and 4831(sc). I have 20 lbs of 4350 so will probably end up trying a load w that as well.

I’m looking for thoughts on a load or range that will give some longevity on brass/barrel life but still utilize the BCs on 180 class bullets.

barrel isn’t seasoned yet and will change but I haven’t seen any real pressure signs through 53.5 other than a couple of faint ejector marks which I get on just about every other cartridge I load for w exception of 223 and 6BR.

I decided to go w Norma brass as I didn’t want to expand lapua and deal w donuts. Does anybody else have experience w Norma brass? I tried to get Peterson brass but grafs is on backorder but if anybody has experience with Peterson brass I’d love to hear it... especially velocities between Norma and Peterson.

Overall, I’m loving 284 Win so far.. my first 21 shots were .3 and .2 gr from 47.0-52.6 and grouped like finished group most of them which is pretty unique over 250ish FPS spread. I can’t wait to get this dialed in!

Haven’t tried RL26 but keep hearing rumors of it coming back this spring. I have a few lbs of it left but am saving it for my 6.5 PRC as I’m only running 2,900 mv w/180s.
