Up until now my experience with precision rifles has been shooting an AR15 SPR build that I put together a couple years ago off an 18" Rainier Arms match barrel. I like the gun a lot but recently I've been wanting something with a little more ass to it than the 223/5.56 round. Something that can stretch out a bit further with the added benefit of being being legal to use for deer season but still something fun to shoot at the range and accurate. I really don't have any aspirations of competition matches. I've been watching a a lot of videos and reading threads and was hoping to get some input on this setup, anything that could make it better as long as it stays in my budget of $2500. As it sits I'd have about $2300 into it which would leave me with some change left over to buy some ammo and maybe a sunshade and some scope caps.

Looks like an excellent starter build! If you have the itch for a more upgraded stock look no father than the krg X-ray chassis. Fully adjustable with a mag system for $550! Definitely post pics up of the rifle and groups! I started similar to you except with a sps varmint and this is how she sits.

Just click on the pics to enlarge them.

And this is a five shot group with 155gr lapua senars 44.5 gr varget with lapua brass! The one not touching the group was a cold clean bore shot!

I'm sure that you want another rifle, but another upper receiver could be a cheaper option. I have a buddy who shoots his LMT MRP 6.8spc out to 720y consistently with hand loads. It holds 1/2-3/4 moa when he does his part. 6.8spc is plenty for deer and hogs.

I guess it could protect the crown but that's not what you should buy it for. It will significantly reduce muzzel jump and make spotting your own shots much easier. With a 20" barrel I say get one but that's one mans opinion.

That was my reasoning for wanting one, I went from a flash hider to a compensator on my AR and loved the difference it made.

The 6.8 upper idea is interesting though, I'll have to look into that a bit more.

if you are going to start looking into AR uppers to fulfill your needs then take a good look at the 6.5 Grendel or .264 LBC.
Then 6.5s in an AR platform are quite effective

I'm not a semi auto buff so I can't help you there but good luck with whatever route you decide to take!
