Magpul Hunter vs Stockys

Hello all,

I have a Ruger American Predator in 6.5 cm that I am wanting to improve accuracy a bit more in an attempt to feel more confident should I have to take a shot at game past 300 yards. I know these rifles have great accuracy for what they are but I have also seen many that typically have a flyer in a 5 shot group. I am trying to avoid having flyers and simply wanting a better stock than the original. It will be used mostly for hunting but occasionally to do some target practice. Nothing further than 700 yards.

Any recommendations on which route I should go? I am looking at the two options listed below and would like to stick to those two only.

I put mine in a MDT LSS chassis. Not really for hunting I guess but I sure like it.

That chassis system is beautiful. I feel like the dark earth tone is a nice contrast to the black on the rifle. I'm sure it's also great with allowing the barrel to breath and cool down fast. I'm simply preferring a stock over a chassis system.

I almost went with Boyd's but with all the added options I wanted the price started climbing. I ended up getting the used chassis. If it was my hunting rig, I would have went with the Boyd's with CDI bottom metal.

This is from the chassis using Hornady 120gr A-Max, 5 shots, 100 yrds. Can't wait until I start reloading for this rifle. Great bang for the buck, that's for sure.

Boyds has come out with this. I don't have one yet, but am thinking about it.

I was actually not aware of that one, looks very interesting and different than what is out there but not my style.

I have the Boyd's Prairie Hunter on my Ruger American Ranch in 300 BLK, and am really happy with it. It's a good fit for my intended use of that rifle (walking/stalking general hunter), and the price was something that I could live with.

That said, for a longer range rig like a varmint-barrelled 6.5CM, I'd personally want something with an aluminum bedding block. I really think that the Magpul is a pretty good option, especially if there is a chance that you may have to shoot it off-hand. A lot of folks will complain about the grip angle (and thickness, or lack thereof), but I think that that is one of the compromises that is inherent to a hunting stock (more vertical grips are less comfortable to shoot off-hand for a lot of people).

I am anxiously waiting for Magpul to release their hunter stock late this year for my Ruger American Predator. Stock selection is pretty sparse unless you get a Boyd's or MDT chassis and the Tupperware stock that comes with the RAP is pretty poor. An aluminum frame that can have moderate adjustment of LOP and cheek risers is a welcome relief. I have a Magpul hunter on a R700 that is my deer rifle and I like the grip angle.

I am anxiously waiting for Magpul to release their hunter stock late this year for my Ruger American Predator. Stock selection is pretty sparse unless you get a Boyd's or MDT chassis and the Tupperware stock that comes with the RAP is pretty poor. An aluminum frame that can have moderate adjustment of LOP and cheek risers is a welcome relief. I have a Magpul hunter on a R700 that is my deer rifle and I like the grip angle.

That's exactly the reason why I want something better. The original one is very cheap and flimsy. When you upgraded to the Magpul Hunter on your R700 did your groups improve?

Yes. I did notice my groups improve. By improving I mean group size seems to be the same 1moa, but the rate of uncalled flyers dropped off. I seemed to get a random flyer every group. I bought a used AAC-SD in .308 and that rubber Hogue stock was tough to get comfortable behind. I have a longer LOP at 14.75" and that Hogue was way too short. The flexibility of that stock was causing a flyer or two every 5 shot group (I suspect when I tried to load the bipod and leaned into it too much). As much as I would love to get a chassis system for that 700, budget prohibits it and I settled on the Magpul stock because I could get bottom metal, mags, a stiffer stock, and adjust LOP and cheek rise for an affordable price. I know its not the greatest option out there compared to the high end chassis systems, but for use on a square range and for hunting it is a nice blend of both qualities. The lighter weight and durability is an added bonus when humping up the mountain and it has enough features to get me into a better neutral position when I'm on the range. I just wish Magpul would get off their ass and get the RAR hunter stock out before hunting season this fall, but I suspect it wont be until Nov-Dec.

I pre-ordered one at Brownells mid April. Emailed Magpul in late April and they replied that it was still being tested.

Well, scrap optics planet. Called them last night and they said they won’t be getting their Magpul stock order in until late September. Midway has them in stock, and my order has already shipped. Only what a year after the expected release? At least it’s on the way!

I'd go with the Stocky's laminate and not look back. That shit is stable and strong as all get out. Plus modifying to add adjustable combs/rails/sling swivels/flush cups is easy as hell whereas it's either a PITA or impossible with plastic stocks.
