No one who has any experience will do a Bartlein or Krieger 18" SPR with rifle length gas do to the Gasport erosion problem call up Compass Lake engineering and talk to Frank about the issue you're going to have to stick with intermediate or mid-length gas.

    Vltor makes excellent upper receivers.
    SLR for the ABG
JP BCG always a perfect Choice
IMO .. The KAC Rail is just to expensive, there are many other quality handguards out there for half the price, other than that sounds like you've got a respectable build in the making.

If you're not going to build yourself I would suggest Lee Wells for the assembly, he's a very honest guy and the quality of his is work top-notch. Not to mention that his prices are extremely reasonable.

How could picking up the the gas further down the barrel create more erosion? Seems like shorter gas would be subject to more pressure and volume.

Do tell. Gas port erosion is inevitable but I've never cut a barrel to study it much less know at what point it becomes a problem. I'm open to learning new things but my brain sees it the way GH41 says.

Call up Frank at Compass Lake engineering and he will explain it to you, but the one thing you guys are missing is that he says it's only a problem with bartlein and Krieger barrels so I think it has something to do with the particular steel they use

Interesting. I'll have to take your word for it until I feel the need to buy one. Hate to burn up the guys time just to satisfy my curiosity.

Thanks for the input, I already have the URX, I wasn't aware of the gas port issue, I didn't know why they stopped offering rifle length gas.

You really don't need anything longer than mid-intermediate with an adjustable gas block anyway on a 18" Barrel anyway.

I went intermediate with mine with a AGB, JP SCS, and JP LMOS, and recoil is almost non-existent it barely shakes my reticle on full magnification. I have a brand new in box American Precision Arms Gen 2 micro bastard muzzle brake and I didn't even bother installing it because it shoots so smoothly

I would take a look at centurion or WOA barrels as well. My preference would
be rifle gas and properly ported w/o adjustable gas block. A made to order
criterion would be near the top of my list as well.

Wonder if the gas port erosion issues are due to now common oversized port sizes.

I am a fan of VLTOR uppers. If not on a tight budget, LMT enhanced bolt.

WOA is going to be the best you can get for the money. if you can get a Douglas spun up for a reasonable price they are also good performers, but as soon as you step into the $350 range you might as well go Bartlein or Krieger.
