Thinking about repurposing my SSG 3000 for shooting to one mile.

Obviously, the .308 won't do the job but Benchmark makes replacement barrels in the following calibers:

22-243, 6 Creedmoor, 6.5 Creedmoor
243, 6x47, 6.5x47
260, 6 REM, 6.5x55
308, 6 SLR, 7x57
6XC, 7-08

A 26-inch barrel in 6.5 Creedmoor throated for the 147 gr ELD-M would seem up to the task.

Would appreciate any advice or better ideas.

I reload so would not be buying commercial ammunition.

Thank you for sharing your experience.

I have a Benchmark 27" barrel for SSG 3000 in 6.5x55, which shoots well with RL26 pushing either SMK142 or 147 ELD-M to about 2850 fps. The load development was surprisingly easy for this barrel. I was able to fine tune the load with less than 100 rounds fired for each combo. If you make a 30" barrel, I bet you can close to 3000 fps.

Why 6.5 x 55 not 6.5 Creedmoor or any of the other Benchmark options?
It has more powder and higher velocities, better suited for farther out there.
I notice they say that is only a sample, I wonder if they have more options and you might find one more suited for the application than those listed. I have no idea on the constraints of the ssg platform though

You can go 1 mile with 308win in the SSG3000. The recepy is a barrel with 1-8" twist and 198gr WarnerFlatline bullets. The long mag will handle the long col. At less than extreme range the barrel handles regular bullets just fine. The extended barrellife of a 308 barrel will reduce overall cost shooting Flatlines at extreme ranges.

Let me be the honest person here. Short action calibers are not really qualified for one mile shot. Yes by luck or shooting a mountain sized target or on a weird wind dead day, some people may have done it here and there. Possible? Yes. Recommended? No. Save your money and build a 338LP or something like that for more realistic one mile fun.

In general, I agree. Where the SSG 3000 is different is allowing extremely long COAL.

I already shoot a .300 Win Mag and the .338 Lapua to one mile.

Was hoping to do the same with a more modest caliber.

Even considered .223 for awhile but I came back to reality. But if anyone has any ideas, I'm listening.

Thank you for being honest.

The Sig barrel is 1;10 so I would need a new barrel to shoot those.

Is that my best option or would one of the 6, 6.5's or 7's be a better choice?
