Does anyone own a AXMC with a factory 300 norma mag barrel? After some testing and luckily not getting blown up, I've found out that the freebore is too short to run 215berger or 225eldm bullets. What shorter bullets are people running? I may have to ship my barrel off to have more freebore added.

Yes I am hand loading. My die actually has bottomed out and I can't seat it any deeper I lack about another .50 thousands just to seat it right at the lands.

Sounds like a die problem. You should have plenty to a seat a bullet to saami length or less. My Hornady die allowed me to seat a 230 into my flatline specific chamber which was .1” shorter than yours.

What is your COAL? Looks like SAAMI specs for COAL is showing 3.681. My COAL just touching the lands is 3.401. That's way shorter than what SAAMI specs is saying if it's correct.

There’s gotta be something else going on. When my freebore was .112”, a 215 hybrid at touching was 3.50”. I re-throated my barrel to .250” and the new OAL was 3.63. Saami freebore is .215 according to my prints.

How are you measuring to find the lands?

I'm using the Frankford Arsenal COAL gauge. Below are the steps how to use it. I know going by the ogive is a better way, but I have used this method with two 6.5cm and two 308 and it has always worked well. After I establish a COAL I load and measure to the ogive when actually reloading.

Install the appropriated caliber size tip on the end of the cleaning rod (sold separately)
  • Insert the cleaning rod down the barrel until there is contact with the bolt face then install one c
  • Remove the bolt and drop a bullet (projectile only) into the chamber
  • Hold the bullet against the rifling with a pencil, touch the bullet tip with the cleaning rod tip an
  • Now measure the inside distance between the two clamps with calipers(sold separately) and record the
Also thank you for the reply's and taking the time to try and help me figure this out.

Hmmmm, that should be accurate enough.

There is such a thing as a zero freebore reamer. Used by gunsmiths who throat each chamber in a separate operation specific to the customer’s needs. That would be surprising on a barrel coming from AI or Mile High(not sure who’s doing their barrels now). A fiend of mine just set up a load for his 300 norma barreled AXMC. Mile high did that barrel, and it does have .215 fb.

Did you buy the barrel new?

I would give Euro Optics or Mile High a call.

Explain to them the situation and see what they have to say.

I appreciate your effort to troubleshoot this issue, but a quick call may yield the results you need.

You can call milehighshooting, tell them you need to run the berger/ELD and they will spin a barrel that cater to your needs. They have gunsmiths at their facility spin barrel for AXMC. last time i called, they said turn around time is about 3 weeks.

my AXMC 338lm bbl freebore is very short too.

I may have chambered that barrel and it has a SAAMI chamber. Win Tactical lengthened the freebore beyond SAAMI.
I'm not sure what is wrong with it. All I know is that it is too short to seat bullets properly. Hopefully mile high will call me in a few days and let me know what is going on and I will post it here.

Update. Mile High tested the barrel and said there was for sure something wrong with it. They were going to send me a new barrel even though I didn't buy the gun there and just send the bad barrel to wintactical. I thought that was really nice of them. But Mile High called me back to say that wintactical wouldn't replace the barrel but would fix the one I had. I didn't really like that answer so I called the place I bought it from and they contacted accuracy international and accuracy international told them that they would replace the barrel but I had to send them the whole gun to make sure everything fit right. I don't really like the idea of having to send the whole gun but it doesn't look like I have much of a choice. So unfortunately for me looks like I'll have to wait a few more weeks before this is fixed. I do have to give a shout out to mile high. They were great working with me and they will have future business from me.
