So I’ve got a mk12 mod 0 I built about a year ago. I now want to build an identical one in .308. As identical as I can get it. Just a question about the barrel and front sight block. I want to run a Lilja or shilen barrel, but can’t find an spr profile. Will the pri front sight block fit, being that the clamping surface is so wide on the sight block and most barrels just have the .750od surface area for a standard lo pro gas block?
Also, will an Allen engineering collar fit snug, being that it won’t be on an spr profile barrel? It will purely be for aesthetics on this one
Thanks in advance

I can't say for sure if the flip up front sight and collar will fit. A quick email to Ron Allen will get you the answer with no uncertainty.

If you haven't already bought the barrel, why not buy a barrel extension, the bolt and have the barrel chambered and profiled to the SPR Profile? I'm pretty sure Ron makes the muzzle brake on 30c
cal as well.

That’s a good idea on getting a blank profiled. Just shot Allen an e mail also.
Any ideas on who turns barrel blanks?

almost an smith can strait profile barrels, thread and install the extension, etc. It might help to know what part of the country you're in, assuming you don't want to ship it. I consider my guy exceptional and if you're in middle TN or southern Ky I'll see if he's taking new people. He is friends with Gene Barnett, who made the original five Mk12 test barrels (as well as a bazzilion otherd for the military) and has the original print still hanging in his shop.

Thanks for the response. I’m in TX, but don’t mind shipping out a blank to get turned. Is he working at high caliber sales now? Can’t remember the name but I know they’ve got a gentlemen over there who was with crane and helped with the mk12 barrels way back. And that would be much appreciated if you ask him if it’s something he could do. I’m not in any huge rush. I also reached out to compass lake engineering, and high caliber sales.

You're probably talking about Allen Brown, who did a lot of stuff at Crane and had worked at HCS. Over the years Gene and Ron both filtered through there, for one thing or another but I don't think either officially worked for Crane.

Ron provides the profile print for the barrel on his suppressor page. I'm sure, with the huge amount of Across the Course national champions in Texas, that there is a lot of local talent that can handle this for you. IMO, the trick is going to be finding someone who knows the gas port size, as you're going a little outside the box.

Looks like that’s what I’ll do. A few people got back to me, mainly saying they can do the barrel but need dimensions. You said someone has the dimensions posted somewhere?
Thanks

I don't see why you couldn't use the same .750" PRI gas block + flip up sight as on a 223 and PRI sells a float tube and spr rail for 308 rifles too. Only head scratcher would be a barrel in the right profile for the ops brake and collar.

Of course if you can live without the ops brake and collar then any 18" rifle gas barrel would work.

IIRC PRI also sells a .875" flip up sight gas block so you could do a heavier barrel as well.
