STN you seem like a sensible guy and truth be told Trump nor the US want to war with you or Canada. well AJ may be ready and its good he is because there should always be someone with an alternate plan in case shit goes sideways.
Any way what isnt being reported is that Trump offered the world absolute free trade - no tariffs anywhere - and all these weasels all the sudden were "Whoa, wait a minute, lets not go there because we cant compete unless you guys absolutely hamstring and cut the achilles of your people and your economy. We absolutely like the lopsided relationship."
This is about the siphoning off of US assets to share with the rest of the world. The people that are producing those assets are tired of the shit. The European countries and Canada threatening to isolate the USA reminds me of a loud, argumentative, nasty spouse that threatens to give their mate the silent treatment. The silent treatment from someone like that, and the threat of Canada and European countries threatening to isolate the USA would be more like rewards than punishment.
That is true at our level but watch what happens when the establishment class cant get their new Mercedes or their French wines go up in price.
There will be pain at our level as the cost of necessities increase but the pain is just growing pains that foretell a strong and healthy future economy and country.

After the fall of civilization and the ice age, if we have gotten rid of most of the loosers, it would probably make sense to have the Greater North American Hegemony including what used to be Canada, the USA and Mexico and maybe cut a new wide open channel ocean pathway between the two oceans at the bottom. If free trade was truly free, the governments of countries that trade would not subsidize or otherwise artificially manipulate prices on things sold to other countries, and there would be no tariffs, import duties/taxes etc. The real difficult part would be determining if a government somehow subsidizes prices on items so the trading price is artificially low in hopes of driving the receiving countries competing business into the ground.

And it was created to oppose the Warsaw Pact... which gave the illusion that it was going to pour through the Fulda Gap and take over Europe for a couple of generations. The reality is that they had lost 100 million folks earlier in the century (more, if you count Stalin's little penchant for killing his own). And wanted to be left alone to rebuild and, perhaps, flex their muscles with proxy wars and pinpricks to thumb their noses at the west, especially the U.S. But since no war was fought... we can argue for decades... was it because of NATO, or was it because... nothing happened. Absence of an event doesn't explain the factors that created its absence. Not well.
The fact these days is that the world is getting more nationalistic. The 'open borders' movement is backfiring and has flooded wealthy nations with people who should be at home rebuilding their own countries. Lots of causes for that... I get it. But the massive refugee movements and economic well-being-seekers are creating angst in the country's they're invading (or being welcomed-into) and the backlash is nationalism. Because the refugees are not integrating or assimilating... they are trying to take over. Pushed along by the identity politics movements that are... pushing the crisis.

I am a Dual Danish citizen, and you don't get Americans AT ALL. Scandinavian socialism only works (or rather worked) when there is a homogenous society. Giving everyone the same outcome actually works when everyone wants the same things and defines happiness the same way. Sharing the same language, culture, traditions, values, and ethics is what makes socialism possible, and not a complete disaster. Norway will be the last socialist country, but it's not because of mineral wealth, it's because they seem to want to keep their culture in tact.
The USA is ALOT more complicated. Nothing in Norway is scalable or works in a pluralistic society.
