Hey guys had a question, is there a reason people don’t run a Scar 17 or at least I don’t see them ever in PRS style matches? Not the gas gun series but the open side

I’ve only been to 2 matches, and they were “local” matches run similarly to prs matches. In the first, the max score was 70, high score was 61, and high score in gas gun division was 26. In the second, the max score was 76, high score was 68, and high score in the gas gun division was 35. I believe that, in the case of competitive precision rifle shooting, it is the Indian AND the arrow...

    Compared to a bolt gun...
Lack of accuracy, lack of velocity, lack of good long range chamber offerings, (on the scar especially) weird recoil that doesnt help with spotting shots and adjusting, no really good accuracy oriented light triggers.

You can run a gas gun, but I would say try and do it at a match/range that is 700y or less for the whole or most of the match.

dont let the scores scare you off from a gasser...if you can actually shoot a gasser (be honest with yourself) itll be fine...most guys runnin a gasser in matches would struggle with the best bolt gun, and the good guys wont run one

Which begs the question “why won’t the good guys run one?”
Because they will drop points, relative to their bolt actions, and be less competitive.
I posted the scores merely for illustrative purposes. The top shooters would have, probably, shot good scores with gas guns. Would they have been top scores? The top shooters didn’t risk it. To the OPs actual question- I don’t think the scar17 is ideally suited to the prs game, and there are better suited options in its price range. If you have one, take it to a match and tell us how you did. For the record, I would have placed well in the gas gun division, using my bolt gun...?

If I was going to do it, which I'm not, I'd run the heaviest, 26" barrel possible, direct impingement, in a 6.5 Creedmore.
    "weird recoil" LOL.
There is a reason there is a gas gun category that isn't open or factory.

ive run a gas gun twice in our club matches so far this year...finished 2nd both times @ 75+% for the match...i dont own or want a scar tho, and i agree its not the best choice, but too many people act like "gas gun? o no chance..." ...lots of top guys wont run something different because theyre scared of looking bad, they wont run a 308 either...some of us will run a variety and still stay at the top, is what it is

reliability over the duration of shooting is always an issue, lots of moving parts to go wrong or have problems

its pretty simple really...go shoot prone at 100 yds, if you can hold 1 moa, move to a barricade...if u can hold 1.5 moa...the rest is on you

Reason I ask is purely just because I have a 17 that I don’t shoot much anymore and I’d like to use it for something other than a square range. And it’s been super reliable always, so I figure maybe it would work out. I’ll try to see what I can do on a barricade accuracy wise. Maybe that’ll give me a better idea.

Locally here, we had a competitor who took his Scar, that he does well with in 3-gun, and shot some matches with us to see if he liked shooting long range. After a relatively short time, he built a purpose-built bolt for the LR matches. The .308 could not carry it's weight out of the short barrel at 800-1000+ yards. Inside of that, he did very well on certain stages that favored the advantages of a gas gun over a bolt. So, it depends more than a bit on what type of match you are shooting and how the stages are set up.

Along those same lines, we have another shooter here locally that does very well with either bolt or gas gun, but favors his 6.5 Creedmoor gas gun (which is a freakin' hammer by the way). He does well in actual PRS matches even though his job and schedule keep him from joining the PRS itself. He took first in last weekend's match at Altair using the 6.5, as that specific COF included stages that favored gas gun over bolt.

As already said, you will best answer this question for yourself by just shooting a match with it, after you have practiced a bit on barricades and shooting some distance targets prone. The experience will be worth it, it will answer your questions, and will likely provide you with plenty of opportunities for personal improvement. Oh, and it will be fun too. There's always that.

If the Mk 20 SSR was available at the price of a regular SCAR 17 and/or high quality large frame AR...maybe a bit more even, I'd wager they'd popular as all get out. Especially if made available in the right chamberings. Though I reckon you could accomplish something similar with a SCAR 17 kitted out with the Deadshot 6.5 Creed rebarrel + extended rail + one of the various aftermarket stock options.

Still IMO FNH could knock it out the park with a more affordable Mk 20 SSR available in numerous other optional chambers. Maybe even implementing some form of quick change barrel deal. That would be absolutely fckn sick IMO.... AGAIN, AT THE RIGHT (much lower) PRICE!!

The SCAR barrel is already relatively quick change. Just a few torx screws and a torque driver.

Additionally, FN really needs to change the MK20 buttplate to something a little softer or better shaped. That is the only feature that I hated about the rifle.
