I have a factory 20" r700 308. I want to rebarrel it to another 308 for shooting tactical division in 308. My question is what bullets handle the transonic transition the best? Id like to get as much velocity out of it as possible so im looking at 24-26" barrels probably a 1:11 twist rate. Most of the prs matches i shoot are usually 200-1000y matches with 90% of the shots being 250-600y. I realize shooting the 308 effectively amd consistently beyond 800 can be difficult but its been done before. I think if i can find a load thatll give me enough speed with a higher BC bullet i can get it to be easier. Also need a powder thats not super temp sensitive.

The 178 eldm would be a good pick and its fairly cheap and they are plentiful.
As far as powder goes since its a 308 win you have several great choices that are very temp stable Varget, AR-COMP, 4064, 4895 and several others although the first two are my personal favorites with the 178.

From what I've been seeing with my loads lately, the 155's are a very good option. Run them up to 2800 or 2900 fps and (depending on where you are) be supersonic out to 1100 yards. Trued mine up yesterday. Hornady 155gr ELD-M @ 2810 fps. 1.6 mils to 370 yards, 5.0 mils to 690, and 6.7 mils to 820. They're not too bad in the wind for a .308

I was running the Berger 155 hybrids and having more success than the 175's like you said with a majority of the targets within 600.

I have 308s in everything from 16”-24”. 1/12 twist to 1/8 twist. It’s my favorite so I’m a little slanted in that reguard. I run all of them with 175 SMKs. Can’t do a proper comparison on preformance due to all the different lengths and twist. Why the 175s? Because you can always find them in stock some where, and they are more consistent in my experience. Other bullets have higher BCs but lot changes have cause more that a few load development redos. If your chasing speed 8208 xbr gets it for me in bolt guns. I quit playing that game along time ago so I mostly use Benchmark powder now. Except in the M1As they still get 4064 or 4895.
Remember velocity gain is not guaranteed with a longer barrel. Your rig may like a slower speed. Then your just lugging around a longer barrel for nothing. Of all the 308s I have my bet preformed is a 20” 1/8 on an A4 McMillan. 2610 velocity with 175s. That same load does 2640 velocity in my 24” 1/12. 30 FPS is not worth the extra 4” to me. Good times and good luck.

Have to remember the tactical divison has a limit on muzzle velocity and bullet weight, since active duty dudes are limited to M118LR. Im pretty sure the MV limit is 2750, at least that's what it is for Rifleman's Team Challenges.
I've had really good results with my 175 RDF at 2742 fps through 26" 1:10", 43.5 gr Varget. Was going transonic around 950.

Are you shooting in negative D/A or what?

Lots of good choices now. I can get the 168 ELDM to 2800 out of a 22" tube. Very easy to move around. If there is a velocity limit I would run some reasonable numbers looking at which will hold up on against the wind the best. I gota try these 155s I have sitting around. Wonder if I can get them to 2900?

All 155gr I have tried in my 26" 1-12 twist shot great with minimal load work, the Scenars were my favorite but honestly I abandoned the 155 bullet weights since the 178 allways bested them and anchor everything I have shot with them with authority.

For target only the 155 Scenar would be a great option if your rifle likes them.
I can't remember the exact numbers but I know they were easily running in the 2900fps range with Varget in Lapua Palma brass and CCI 450 primers.
The custom comps shot great to but the BC sucks.
