Debt and property taxes keeping a man down....

“The timing is too significant for us not to pull through,” he said. “This year is the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Black Panther Party in Illinois, and next year it’ll be the 50th anniversary of the killing of Fred Hampton Sr. and Mark Clark. Failure is not an option.”

So, am I missing something, or is this a case of a person (or persons) whom were irresponsible to the point of (what I would call) massive debt and they're looking for others to pay for their negligence?

This isn't just a 'late payment' or two, or 'missed payment' or two. This is a long-term pathological negligence and seeking others to bail them out.

Or....?

This is one of those moments where having "fuck you money" would be fun: buy the house at auction and either tear it down, donate it to CPD as a mini-precinct, or paint it tip to toe in MAGA murals and let the local denizens destroy it themselves

Excellent suggestion. Tear it down to the slab, and have a big ass anti-communist monument made of rebar or something deployed there.

Although, donating it to CPD would probably get the best reaction.

And that’s after the family and some others got a 1.85M settlement.
