Sako TRGS action

Currently set up in .300 WM. Is it worth having trued and rebarreled in .300 Norma mag?

I am currently in the planning, gathering of parts for a ELR rifle build and am torn between the Sako action and a Remmy LA.

Opinions wanted.

I can't say if a 300WM or a 300 Norma is going to serve you better, but I sure would take the Sako over the Remington.

1. Need some clarification - seems you currently have a Rem 700, not a TRG. Correct?
2. As best I know, the only way you can get a Sako TRG 42 or 42A1 action is to buy the rifle. Do you understand otherwise?
3. Saying "ELR" these days is rather vague. What maximum distance to you want to shoot?
4. Are you locked into 300 WM? If so, how so - reloading gear, tons of brand X brass?

It looks like he’s talking about using a TRG-S action. It should be easy enough to buy one cheap to cannabalize.

If you're set on .300 Norma, you will have a better time with a Remington action - bolt face size being the primary concern.

If you're open to another .300 Win or .300 PRC, the TRG should be just fine, as there would be no need to mess with the bolt face.

As was said above, give some serious thought to the .300 PRC, it just means a new barrel.
If you get a very long, fast twist barrel you can be pushing out to 2000 yards with it.

My error is assuming a TRG 42 or 42A1. Sako lists the TRG-S as an "old model". Actually I'd never heard of a TRG-S. Doing a Google on it yielded no one selling one, so finding one is a "maybe". I asked whether the action he currently has is a Rem 700 or Sako because truing the Rem 700 is SOP and I'd be surprised that a Sako would need truing. Do Sako's need truing?

In any case, he has yet to reply to:

I have a trgs action that is currently a .300WM rifle. I am thinking of having it worked and a new barrel for it in
300 NM. Will only need a bolt mod for the lapua head size.

I also have a Rem 700 in 7mag that could be done the same way. There is a better aftermarket for the Rem 700 but I feel the Sako action would make a better platform than the Rem action. That is the opinion I was looking for, Sako vs Rem action to build off of since I have both in hand already.

No, not locked into any caliber. Prefer to stay .30 caliber. Either .300WM or .300NM
My first goal is a bullet on target at 1 mile. So a 1 mile+ elr goal.
.300 NM brass is not impossible to find and neither are dies.

300WM can get you to a mile without too much trouble. 300NM even better but the bolt face has to be done. If the extra expense of the 300NM doesn’t scare you off then you will enjoy it. There are several threads for 300NM including reloading data so read to your heart’s content. Both are very capable but the Norma performance comes at a cost premium.

I am beginning to lean toward staying with the .300 WM. I don't know anything about the prc round. I will look it up and see what I think.

Are the gains enough to warrant .300 WM Imroved?

The Sako would be the better choice some gunsmiths won’t do the bolt work for a Lapua Mag size case on a rem 700 action anymore due to concerns about action/volt strength. The 700 clones are viable though if you are really wanting to use 700 aftermarket components. The Sako is such a well put together gun there isn’t much left to do (especially is a TRG as the stock is excellent and so is the trigger-I don’t know if the TRGS trigger is as good).
