CCI #450 primers. What device do you use to prime brass?

I am using the RCBS hand primer and these primers are small enough to where nearly two of them will go into the "chamber" of the hand primer. Plus getting the primer to seat is difficult at first because everything seems to big for that smaller primer on the device.

Any suggestions? Am I doing something wrong?

Are you using the small primer feed or did you keep the large primer feed and rod in?

Large is black I think and small is white.

Edit: This is a new model with out a shell holder but once its apart you can see where the shell holder would go if you have the older version.

I use an RCBS hand primer with 450's and the only issues I've had is that it's very uncomfortable to use and priming crimped 5.56 brass that creeped through the crimp removal process.

For SR primers, just make sure you're using the white insert with the proper primer plunger and shell holder.

Well it should still have the different large and small feeders and rods. If it only has a large set then youre missing the small.

I use a RCBS automatic bench priming tool. Very fast, convenient, and precise seating.

I must be missing one of the rods then. I think I only have one and i have used it several times for large rifle primers with no issues

No problems with my Frankford and the ergonomics are the best of any of them I’ve had. I actually stopped using my K&M’s after I got it.

Maybe this is silly, but will a primer "go off" if I hand press it in too hard? I don't know why it makes me so nervous but it does lol

You would have to be the hulk to do that.


This is how I primed for years on the lee loader.. thats right... one at a time with a hammer.

Hand primers are just fine.
The only time Ive ever had to put in actual oomph force to seat them is when a crimp isnt all the way removed. And you can definitely feel that something isnt right with those right away, its a mechanical dead stop. If you keep going you can force it in but it makes it ugly and you can tell the primer is a bit messed up. So stop and ream out the bad swage on that particular case before you rape it and its gravy again.

I use the Frankford arsenal hand primer as well.
I love the thing, it is leaps and bounds better than the hornady handheld unit I was using.

It works great with the small primers as well as large, couldn't be happier with it.

I think the older RCBS hand primers where you have to change things out are better.
A pain in the ass to change everything but you know what you have when done.

This - seated over 40 k primers with this tool and it’s still perfect. It’s so good I don’t even swap out the centre
spindle for small rifle primers in x47, I just leave them seated flush with the base. Sub 10 ES and tiny groups
don’t lie . It does everything from 6br to 338 Improved without difficulty .
