You are in no way wrong, I fully agree with you not to mention thieves, etc.
But I live in a small enough area that if I won, when they send the congratulations email out, everyone I haven't seen for years would be hitting me up for dibs on shooting it. So I might as well make a day of it after remodeling for better locks. Then, list it in my local classifieds and two days later mark it as sold. No one ever the wiser.

I can tell you from first hand experience that you will be the one who shoots that gun the least once your buddies find out you own one! And tell them its BYOA or it can get rather expensive.
