Newby question. I see talk of tripods a lot here. New to long range shooting, I wonder if it is for spotting scopes or a shooting aid.

Yes to both. Spotter use, direct mount the rifle and use as a rest. Match guys will also use a leg of a tripod as a rear stabilizer.

Just started using a leg as a rear stabilizer after seeing a video on YouTube with someone showing that technique. Works outstanding. Definitely a game changer
Ah I see it. So now I need two RRS tripods? shits getting out of control.
A few (3-4) years ago I was in a match and saw people using BogPods and such for the back of their guns, which seemed like an improvement over wobbling around hanging free (intentionally non-sturdy barricade). Then a couple years ago I RO'd that stage, and saw the 'super squads' come thru and use the RRS tripod and just absolutely smoke the stage. There was a little down time between squads, so I grabbed my rifle and ran my Manfrotto 055 up like that and used it in a similar manner... holy hell, it was stunning what a difference it made 
For me that's the cool part about RO'ing... I get to see what *everybody* uses, not just the folks I'm squadded with. Definitely learned something that day!

Ok, another question along those lines. Does a normal tripod (thinking along the lines of my Vortex tripod I use for backcountry hunts) work or does it need to be something heavier duty?
Will it extend tall enough for you to use spotter or binocs without having to lean over then it will work for you for spotting.
Yeah, I just meant will it work for shooting off of. I can stand and have it extend enough to use binos and spotters with. But is a normal tripod sturdy enough to shoot off?

Doesn't the use of a tripod circumvent the challenge of an obstacle?

Well then, it depends on the tripod (or to be more accurate, how much weight the tripod is rated for, and how heavy your rifle is). The heavier the rating, the more rigid the tripod; which means a more stable platform to shoot from.
