Dem introduces bills to eliminate Electoral College

As we aren't a democracy what is your point?

R
That is correct. What gets me is when people use terms in which they know nothing about. A pure Democracy is government by mob rule. It's run by 50.1% of the people on any issue. The other 49.9% can go suck pond water.

Our founding fathers had to craft a government that strikes a balance. Any student of political science will tell you that the most representative form of government is a pure Democracy run by people who vote on issues and the simple majority wins. That's not the most efficient form of government and can also disregard the rights of the people who get one less vote than the other group.

The other answer is a centrally governed system. The most extreme system of government is a monarchy or dictatorship. That has the most potential to be the most efficient form of government and would safeguard the interests of those in positions of power that are subservient to the dictator. The wishes of the majority don't necessarily align with the dictator who has the physical power (read military) to back up his word. Even though it can be the most efficient form of government, a dictatorship can also be the cruelest form of government.

So, our founding fathers found a balance between the two extremes. The American civil war was basically fought over the question as to whether or not we would be governed by a strong central form of government. IMHO, the Northern states won with the strong central form of government intact.

Now the question of the meaning of Trump's statements about the electoral college being a disaster for democracy. Taken literally, I'm glad that the electoral college is bad for democracy. That's because pure democracy is bad for everyone. It's inefficient, only benefits the interests of a simple majority and ultimately is self-destructive.

If Trump meant something else then we can only speculate on the meaning behind his statement. We are not a democracy. We are a Federal Republic. And I would add we are a Federal Republic with a oligarchical leaning, as the SCOTUS rules by judicial activism.

If given a choice between what we have now versus the two extremes of government, I’ll stick with what we have now.

He was a Democrat in 2012, then he read the Constitution and ran and won as a Republican. Nice try though, douchebag

He has switched his political party a lot, so it's hard to keep track, but Trump was registered as a Republican when he sent that tweet about the Electoral College being "a disaster for democracy." (Here's his voter registration in April 2012: http://thesmokinggun.com/sites/default/files/assets/trumppartyswitchrep.jpg)

That's what annoys me about the guy. He'll do or say whatever he thinks is best for him at the time and then change positions when something else might benefit him more. He talks a big game, but he's mainly looking out for #1, just like any other slimy politician.

I reserve the right to change my mind, and haven't much problem with someone else who thinks the same way.

...Or did I get that wrong?

If they don't kill him outright, I'm going to vote for him again in 2020. If he's a shit sandwich, he's my shit sandwich...

Sorry if anyone takes offense...

(Not really...)

Sure hes just like every other fucked up Republican but.... I sure like his style now. Like my Dad used to say. "I'll ride that horse till he takes a shit , then I'll get on another one."

Did it annoy you when Obama, Bush and Clinton did the same thing or is it just DJT????

You are trying too hard, many here are not Trumpkins, but many here do judge him by his enemies, people like you and worse,,,, we always seem to have the same enemies he does so its really an affinity based upon disliking the same people he drives nuts and being hated by the same people that hate him, so on that note you can go fuck your self up the ass with a barb wired wrapped baseball bat you fucking jerkoff.

To be clear,,,,,,,, people like you make Americans like DJT more and more because we hate you that much. Please remove yourself from my country or my planet so we dont have to have these things in common with the Donald.

Jerry, just to be clear. I also voted for trump, but will not this time. This thread as well as others on the forum relate to this. If removing the electoral college gets the party started faster I'm all for it.
Why does everyone always forget they are the same party in reality ? They just violate different things. The repubs, nor the dems can't do much without him signing the bill anyway. I actually like seeing the house/senate/pres being from different party's for the most part....since they will not get much done in big bill passing.

I don't hate trump at all, he well....just did nothing for me. What we have to fear is what he will give up to get his agenda done. Every one of us know the repub's will bend over and take it in the ass from the dems. Watch and wait is the game now.

he's not the true 'shit sandwich' . Was best choice at the time and might still be the only option coming up in 2020 . Every day he is there it is 'little' harder to hide business as usual for all that are party subsidized to rape the treasury .
This is the True Shit Sandwich .

I sympathize with a lot of what you say, but taking apart the country without a article 5 convention of the states will end badly, the constitution will be dead once the EC is gone.

This transcends trump, this is an attack on the republic.

There is already or were enough states for the convention on taxes ?? forgot which one it was....and they said since some of you were on the list....then off....then got back on.....you can't do that ?????????

Fuck them all.

If this is true, then it is our duty, everyone here to do something about it. So, what’s the plan?

NO one wants to give up sports games, tv, internet, house payments, sending kids to college, drinking a beer in your recliner, going to the movies, camping, etc....the list is endless.

Did you benefit from the tax cut?
Pretty much everyone at my workplace wound up with more money in their paychecks each week.
Enough for a box or couple boxes of ammo.

(Funny the "Liberals" at work who were all whining about how they needed more taxes for social welfare & shouldn't cut taxes, grumbled and huffed then quietly took the money and shut up... I haven't seen any of them willingly sending the extra money back to the government....

corp america gets millions.....I get 50 bucks woohoo !!!! its so small I have not noticed it.

Since most of my earnings come from commission I get taxed on a flat rate...44.5% so yeah...fuck you pres.

Why don't the republicans ever file literally the opposite of all the retarded democratic bullshit that gets filed year after year after year?

First you should only have 1 shot at it; either its done or not. Move on.

Second, why aern't we doing the same bill equivalent of shitposting the dems do and have bills all over the place like, 'Stop kneejerk gun control bullshit' and 'Close the border forever for everyone', etc.

‘More than a century ago, we amended our Constitution to provide for the direct election of U.S. Senators," he added. "It is past time to directly elect our President and Vice President.” - Steve Cohen (D-Tenn.)

The single worst act in our history to remove checks and balances and deliver unlimited power to the Federal government. By this act they turned states governments into municipalities with no real power in Washington at all. Restoring power for states ledgeslatures to elect Senators would be the single most powerful step to restoring control of our government we could make.

I believe that is the second worst act in our history. The worst act was to allow votes from people who did not own property.

Seriously. Our founding fathers got it right. I’d love to see a 3/5ths clause for non property owner votes.

It’s like Benjamin Franklin told that woman...

“We gave you a Republic, let’s see how long it takes you to screw it up!” Or something like that...

Actually I think these are excellent questions.

"Why don't the republicans ever file literally the opposite of all the retarded democratic bullshit that gets filed year after year after year?"

Well, the Democrats succeed in this by clogging the legislative register with meaningless BS measures that are intend to delay, oppose, obstruct; which still need to be dealt with as part of the process. BTW, does any of this sound familiar? Having the Republicans counter this with 'equal but opposite' measures simply doubles the volume of the problem.

"First you should only have 1 shot at it; either its done or not. Move on."

Taken in combination with the first idea, the leftover measures that have been delayed, opposed, and obstructed would simply age off the register since nobody can reasonably expect all measures to be properly processed (voted on, e.g.), and the 1 shot only rule simply means that important, but lower priority, measures would never be permitted to be placed on the register ever again. Things like hearing protection, etc.

"Second, why aren't we doing the same bill equivalent of shitposting the dims do and have bills all over the place like, 'Stop kneejerk gun control bullshit' and 'Close the border forever for everyone', etc."

The first two responses cover this final proposal, I think.

Nobody wanted to give up the Pre-Revolutionary equivalent pastimes, either; but somewhere around 3% actually did get up off their asses and now we have what we have today, none of which was their fault.

Vaguely remembered, about 18,000 patriots died in that one, which demonstrates how a small minority can successfully challenge and defeat the world's greatest military power, which is precisely what happened. In essence, we had Englishmen fighting Englishmen, which is why it's literally idiotic to think that Americans would never fire on Americans. They did, LOTS, and not just that time, either.

Since then about 650,000 Americans have died in the name of freedom, so the comparisons may seem big, but they aren't actually that big when we figure in population numbers. 50+ thousand died in my war.

There are a lot of parallels between that day and this one, too; ones I really don't like, but the truth remains the truth regardless of my own degree of approval.

Folks here do a lot of offhand and vague referencing to the initiation of a second American civil war. We already had that war, back in the 1860's, the Revolution was a true civil war; and anything new today would be CWIII. Nobody hates war more than those who have had to fight one, and I ally myself with such. It troubles me greatly to see so many who didn't who are so quick to advocate one here in their/my own back yard, and even more greatly those who did and advocate the same.

I don't say do, and I don't say don't; but I really do say get the facts right before you do anything more. Maybe carry a few dead friends to a collection point before your jump up on that soap box.

Might change your priorities some...
