I just spun up a new barrel for a 223 Remington 700 action. Used a 223 match reamer with a .092 fb. I ordered 1k starline 223 brass to try out. I have always been a lapua guy but starline reviews and price was too good to pass up.

Question is the starline case capacity is known to be a little less. The new starline brass weighs in the 101-102gr range and the used lapua stuff I have comes in about 93-94 gr.

Is this case capacity going to have an effect on velocity or is velocity based more so off pressure? I'm gonna try xbr first so I know I can get plenty in there unlike varget. I'm going to use this in quite a few matches this year so I'd like to get all I can but I'm not gonna cry about 20fps.

I have both 223 Starline and Lapua as my mainstay precision brass. I use some old Federal brass which I use for paper stages up close, it's only on 4-5 cycles and the primer pockets are about done on 1/4 of them.

I'm really happy with both brands, Lapua and Starline, but I load medium -ish loads.

I bought 100 of the Starline brass for my 223AI project, fireformed it and am on my 4th firing, but even with 26.3 grains of Varget behind the 88gr ELDM during a ladder test, I didn't get a hint of pressure signs??!! Though my load is in the low node now at 24.6 grains and I expect plenty of cycles at this pressure with no loosening of the primer pockets so far. I'm getting 2813 fps out of a 7 twist 28" barrel with the above load.

I have 4 firings on the Lapua brass too but I bought 500 of them, same thing, no hint of pressure signs with 21.6 grains of H4895 and Berger 70 vld.

For the price I paid for Starline I think I'll buy it instead of Lapua from now on but I should know for sure inside a year when I have 8-10 cycles on it to see how well it holds up.

Yeah I hear ya. I bought 1k starline cheaper than i could get 500 lapis. Good to hear its holding up
