PX Bullshit, Everyone is selling for themselves

I could lock the PX down a 100%, charge everyone using it.

But it again defeats the purpose of being a contributing member and as I said, it does drive a certain amount of valuable traffic.

I could say, you need 100 posts and charge $10 from everyone, that would be a revenue driver and might be worth considering but I don;t want to punish everyone for the abuses of a few

Charging $10 to list product here is hardly punishment. You provide ample impressions to a target demographic. You should charge $10 per listing not $10 for access.

Here is an example of a website with a similar business model as yours. The classified section and forum are separate but feed off of each other. All classified ads are paid for and listing ads in forums is prohibited but you are allowed to point people to your ad.

I’ve been here since 2012 and have sold and bought quite a few things in the PX. I’ve never sold anything just to make a buck, if I’ve got something for sale it’s because im wanting to upgrade my equipment but with that said I would absolutely have no problem paying $25 or more a year to have the privilege to use the PX.

Im guessing the new phallic descriptions by our names "Full Member", "Staff Member" might be related to this.

Definitely not buying anything from any "Limp Members"......just sayin.

Only sold a couple items over here and has gone smoothly! I’m a private on this site but with that being said I probly have over 2000 post . Lost em on the changeover back! No big deal to me though. I just want to say thanks to frank for having this site!

Just because he is showing his dick doesnt mean you have to suck it but yes he has created a good community that gives me no small amount of enjoyment up until the day Im elected gov of Virginia and what I write here is out in the wider public domain.

Im guessing that pic somewhere I posted on here of me wearing a Soviet Army uniform will have little bad consequences if I run as a Dem.

Lmao!

I am showing my DICK

How so, please explain

They are gonna force me to be a dick, that is very clear

How much of a dick is the question

If your going to show your dick in public there’s no sense only showing half of it

No offense intended.

There is a time and a place for beatings and as its your place you get to give them out whenever you choose to.

Ive benefitted from the PX but if people are abusing it or jeopardizing the site crush it.

Always has to be that one guy
I think he said that as a joke saying I was brown nosing on the site. Which I’m not! Just to say your site is great! You do a lot for no gain from me and I’m appreciative ! I would pay if necessary!

I see a fee doing absolutely nothing as far as getting dealers acting as individuals and online sellers away. The reason is simple; either you have to charge an amount that would make basically everyone go away, or you'll charge a fee (with the intent of getting rid of the undesirables) and all they will do is work the fee into the sales. $100/year is just $2 per 50 transactions they ask for extra over the year to cover it, and they're still here with their bullshit because even $100 a year wouldn't deter most of them.

If your main intent is to get rid of those types, you're basically going to have to start with the people you already mentioned; people with 500 posts and 400 of them are in the exchange, people who are known dealers, etc. Then IP ban/delete them, rinse/repeat. I know this is going to require determining a process on how to identify them and require man-hours to do, but I'm sure some would help. I would.

Hell, I can think of three without even looking that fall into this category.

I agree with the original intent that these people who use this site solely to sell things need to go. But I don't think a fee, other than an excessive one which will run the rest of us off from the exchange as well, would achieve that.

The fee is nominal in light of the access you gain.

The legit vendors on here are great because they actually comment and trouble shoot regarding their gear here.

Seems like the manufacturers that court sales here get rewarded with posts of new buyers using their stuff.

Likely the guys skirting the commercial rules are the ones selling gimmicks.

I didnt catch the example posts that set this all in motion.

It’s not the same, that is two different things

Making me be a dick, and showing your dick are not even close

Agreed it was a mal association of your original comment and a comment posted about your comment.

But Frankly (insert Airplane movie joke here) all this talk about your dick is making me a little uncomfortable like its going to be another one of those things that keeps me from being governor or president some day.

I like the “minimum post” rule in order to post ads in PX, and any post in PX thread would not count towards this minimum. I remember the pre-scout days where someone would post “nice rifle” or “GLWS” on for sale threads 100x in 2-3 days. Also down with minimum time on site.

Frank needs a snickers

But seriously there's a lot of good people here and some of them are retired and would probably love to take a work load off frank and be a full or part time mod. Let him do what he does best and leave the hall monitoring to someone else

I for one love the "Commercial Supporter" designations. I've long been a huge supporter of those who support the site and the sport, and I'm far from the only one who will choose a Hide vendor over anyone else in a heartbeat, even if that means I pay a bit more (which is VERY rare).

At the same time, I've called out many here who tried to ply their wares without first getting a commercial account. That report button is an awesome thing for those trying to skirt the system and take advantage of the site ownership as well as those who play by the rules. They're no better than an illegal immigrant in my mind.

This thread alone could probably drive up some of the post count padders since now it's a public thing. In retrospect, too bad this couldn't have been discussed in a more private setting to keep out the riff Raff... But I understand the community should drive the direction we head.

Only 19 more posts for you!

After 6 years :p

However things shake out... and I think LL is on the right track in a number of ways...

Please, please, please... whoever you recruit as the Mod for the PX.... Make his handle PaulBlart!

For the love of all things holy, make this happen.

Cheers,

Anybody but @1J04 . He'd just stand around on his Segway in front of Hickory Farms, eating all the beef stick samples.

Yes, let's keep out Riff Raff ...

It seems to me that the heart of the problem, abuse of the platform, lying about goods, steeling etc. could be easily addressed by denying anonymity to those buying and selling. Those wishing to use the PX forum for such business must voluntarily give their legal names and other info the moderators deem helpful corrections to the problems. This solution would certainly make Snipers Hide unique in the web world. Socrates tells of a man who one morning obtained a ring which gave him the power of invisibility, by the evening he secreted himself in his neighbor's home and watched the wife disrobe. Being hidden or anonymous in platforms such as the PX can bring out the worst in a man's nature. After all, it is Sniper's Hide not Seller's Hide. I would even be interested to consider it a site wide practice.

At the risk of possibly being semi-productive...

Post count limiter is easy (I'm assuming this is wp based) see video.
Can be used to limit bumps as well as topics created individually, but how does one limit effect to just one sub-forum? Shortcode?

You want to stop me posting stuff in the MPT do you?

Well, it will limit the tittie pix...

i've been a member here since 2013 even though i wasn't around for a few years as i had other things going on in my life. Just really came back about a year ago as i finally have a little free time and wanted to start doing some long range shooting. I'm 62 yrs old and not real computer savy, but this site has really helped me out. I've spent about $15,000 on here in the last 6 months , but know i've saved probably another 3-4 thousand being able to buy used. Plus the knowledge i've learned reading and asking questions is invaluable. Hell i haven't even figured out what the boxes by my handle mean now that i see them. That being said, there are some real assholes on this site, who i guess get off making some folks feel small on here for asking for what i'm sure they think are stupid questions. I've got thick skin and just keep my retorts to myself. I don't need to belittle someone else to make myself feel important. This site does not have a good reputation out in the real cyber world though, but i do tell folks if they want to follow rules and "learn" this is the place to go. This site is a treasure drove of knowledge and of course, a good amount of BS, :)

This is not a Wordpress based site, this does not apply

@47guy and @Snipe260 , Its all good. We are all full members. Lets let it rest.

Post 213 more or less explains how this all came about.

Lets all go to the PX now and find one of the scofflaws that doesnt want to comply with the site selling rules and load up his box with PMs asking questions like "Is your .308 chambered for M80" or "Can you get me a few pictures of that reloading die inverted?"

We don’t suffer fools well, you have thick skin, just roll with the arm punches. It’s never personal.

I see that some profiles have nothing but sale ads listed under their posts. Those people should be charged as vendors. One or two items would be okay, but more then that at any one time makes you a vendor. Maybe a 10-30 day vacation for abusers. Frank has said before some people come here and start multiple accounts though and leave them dormant and run through them as needed. It's a lot of work to keep the dishonest people honest.

468shot has the right idea. Per posting fee. This will also allow you to track how many times someone is selling something.

As a new member, I just want to thank whoever established this site and to those who post, educate and spar on the site. It is a great place to learn and the PX is a practical extension of the hobby. As you consider changes, keep in mind that buyers benefit as much as sellers when it works.

It's not cool at all

I agree it needs to change, maybe it's going back to just posts and not letting people buy in, or raising the buy-in cost to a much higher price so it weeds out the Bullshit

But the fact I have guys with over 200+ posts in just the PX is stupid, all they are doing is selling and bumping their shit nobody wants
Then fry the account and don’t look back. They know what they are doing and you do too. You’re the HMFICS. No reason to feel bad. This isn’t a place to make money. Up the price to buy posts. At least you’ll make more on recidivists who continually break the rules and get kicked then return. Or, get ride of the buy-in.

I'm relatively new to long range shooting and having the PX has been invaluable to me to try/buy/sell gear. There are no gun shops within 1-2 hours of me that have any real stock of high quality long range gear. Just a bunch of Ruger Americans and Sightmark scopes. Using the PX, I was able to try a couple different scopes in the span of 2-3 months and sell the ones I didn't like. I certainly wasn't making a profit - like the Razor Gen 2 I just sold for $1199 to @6brman

There have been lots of "inventive" ideas posted in the thread, but most of them are completely unrealistic due to the restrictions of software and the fact that the Hide doesn't employ a fulltime web developer.

The most realistic is a minimum time (1-3 months) AND post count threshold (100), coupled with an annual fee to start any threads on the PX boards. Most other forums I belong to typically charge $10-$20/year and I think most people would happily pay that.

The users who are abusing the system are easy to spot. Ban a couple of them, make it public, and the problem will mostly solve itself. Another shooting forum (BrianEnos - focused on USPSA/IPSC/Practical Shooting) went through this identical process just a couple months ago. Users who had the majority of their posts in the Buy/Sell board had all their posts in the PX deleted without warning and their post count reset to 1. They were invited to resume using the forum in a useful and contributory manner and once they hit 100 new posts, they could resume posting in the PX. Some who were clearly there to only sell never came back. A handful were serious/dedicated shooters who just happened to have a little side hustle flipping gear for profit but they actually started posting really good content and have become valuable members.

I am sort of limited by the software, and I just don't have enough history with this software to know how I can manipulate it.

I can see about going to the guys how have done the custom skins for me and maybe find a company that excels in this software, but honestly, I am not completely sure.

Certain plugins and additions are a big time drain on the system and don't work right. Part of the problem with the old software was capability issues as most of this stuff is 3rd party. If that 3rd party stops supporting the plugin, the whole thing starts crashing and you end up chasing your tail.

I did bump the cost to $33, that seems to be a nice bridge between "yes and no" but perhaps it's not enough, and I need to limit it even further. The abuse is just too substantial to ignore

I totally like the idea of not allowing people to BUMP their posts, that is out of control, we have a 24-hour rule, which is routinely ignored. But every new idea brings on a new set of problems for the mods. I dont want them doing more, I want to automate as much as possible. I really feel they should do as little as possible and not have to Babysit the place. That is fucking stupid.

I may have to do, a $1 a post so buying a 101 posts costs you $100. That would definitely limit it as a lot of people are buying in.

I think $1 per post/add is very reasonable. I look on other gun sites, we have a great one here in Virginia, but nowhere is there glass like here. Not that Ive seen, anyway.

How about 1 item in each category at a time? It would keep the resellers/ dealers out. Then, have a section for resellers/dealers where there is a standard listing fee and verifiable feedback.
You're not being a dick for not allowing others to take advantage of you.
