My grandfather. And now my grandmother both buried in Arlington. I send them a rose wreath every Christmas placed at their tombstone to remind others that they are loved still.
I think of him often and what he was to me and his men. Inspiring, driven, kind, gentle and firm all in one man. Silver Star in combat from battle of Darwin.
Truly inspirational to me and what drives me to hone my craft every day weather on duty, teaching, deployed or off duty with my family.

While there are composites in the blades, these things are bigger than most realize. One set of specs reads - The weight of the foundation of the turbine tower is about 2,500 t, the tower itself 2,800 t, the machine housing 128 t, the generator 220 t, the rotor (including the blade) 364 t. The total weight is 6,012 tonnes exactly.

6012 metric tons is 13.25 MILLION pounds. And they are hell on birds, particularly raptors.

So a typical wind powered generator has a capacity factor of about 20% so for every day that 2 mw generator is in service it produces about 9600kwh on average. A normal bituminous coal fired unit has a heat rate of about 12,500 that means that it takes 12,500 btu to produce 1 kWh of power and it takes about .85lbs of coal to produce that 1kwh of power. So the simplified math says that the statement about a wind generator not producing enough energy to replace the energy needed to construct it is grossly inaccurate. The main problem with renewables is the sun goes down and the wind stops blowing. It takes 2mw in conventional power to back up 3mw of renewables

If you take the time and do the math it didn't happen that way. There is no doubt that the buffalo were over hunted, and that they may have been hunted out in some areas, but take into account that the buffalo heard was estimated to be 60 to 70 million try to imagine how many hunters, how much lead (400 gr per bullet), powder, wagons, and skinners to get into the most remote parts of the un-settled plains... it didn't happen that way.

There are accounts of pioneers in WY finding entire valleys covered in buffalo carcasses. The real problem was disease.

It turns out that the decline in the buffalo corresponds to the time of the first cattle drives to bring cattle from TX to WY. It if far more likely, and logical that disease wiped out the buffalo. When you do the math and take into account the short period of time that the decline happened.

Most records seem to show that the hunters were killing close to a million buffalo a yr. A million a yr in a heard of even 50 million? That would barely be noticible to the total, though it could remove the population in certain areas, like near the rail roads where it was easy to get the hides and meat back to market. The "hunt" ended in about 1884. Even at 2 million a yr from 1864 to 1884 that is only 40 million, now take into account the reproduction rate and add back at least 10 to 20 million and it's just not making sense.
