I’ve got a budget of up to $1k for a ffp scope, main use will be long range plinking. Great deals going on right now for the Steiner px4i ($799), Viper PST ($799) and the Athlon Ares ($599). I’m having a heck of a time choosing one, they all tick boxes in my need/want list, and all have mostly positive reviews. The Steiner is 4x16x56 34mm tube, the PST is 5x25x50 30mm, and the Ares is 4.5x27x50 30mm tube. I’m not dead set on a reticle. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, the good, the bad, and the ugly. I’ve got to make up my mind quick as the sales end in a few days. Thanks!!!

Are you dead set on buying a new scope?
For my money, I’d be looking in the optics section for a $1500-2000 scope that someone else took a hit on buying new, and now wants half of the original cost. You can get a considerably better optic buying second hand.
If you are stuck on buying new, then athalon is probably the best budget option. Check out my boy Dougie over at camera land NY. He’s got some deals going on athalon scopes. Here’s a great option for $599

I've been very happy with the XTRIIs. I've run the 2-10, 3-15, 4-20, 5-25 and the 8-40.

The two I still have are the 2-10, on a crossover hunting/precision rifle and a 4-20 on a dedicated paper puncher.

Used they can be found around $6-700.

Thanks guys for all the insight! Just purchased the Steiner from Cameraland, the time zone shift knocked me out of the sale price, I pm’d Doug to see if they could fit me in for the savings.

I’m having no luck on Google, anyone know the Butler Creek sizes for this scope? I wish the scope came with the regular plastic covers with the elastic string in between, I like those better than the flip up caps.

Zuul, there is another thread where folks are looking for a sunshade and caps for this Steiner. There are some good options in there. I too am looking for something simple like plastic cups attached by elastic. If you find it, let us know.
