I gotta admit, I've been to some low-budget wedding receptions. My wife's cousin had a Taco Bell clone cater her second wedding. My own cousins all had theirs at family restaurants. My BIL had his at a little buffet place. But the love and the togetherness with family and friends is what's important.

Social media now apparently has another avenue for revenge: wedding shaming. My God, the crap people carp about.

Weddings are fucking gay. The less you spend the better. It's like spending a lot of a funeral, dying doesn't require a fucking party planner to happen. You want a good indication of commitment to each other? Don't spend all your fucking money in one day celebrating it, yall probably gonna go a lot further in reality.

And before ye ol salty dogs weight in, no I'm not fucking married and I'm a younger man. I've been best man at three weddings and I fucking hated it each time. Most of my friends had to save up and pay for their own weddings and my sympathetic ass ends up chipping in every fucking time. I've had enough of weddings.

Being married to a good woman who is your best friend, is a wonderful thing. Being married to the wrong woman is worse than hell.

I'm not sure there is someone for everyone, but I believe there is only one true love in a person's life.
I believe lots of folks never find that one.

I'll second that Chikn.

We just hit 35 years married, together for 38. It took a lot of work to get here, but we have never been closer or better friends than what we are now. Trust, respect, commitment.

I'm not a big believer in "True Love" rather I think that humans are designed to be able to form long lasting permanent attachments, if a compatible mate is found and both parties are willing to work to be a single unified entity. I think rather than there being "The Perfect One", there is perhaps a range of choices that can all be made to work, and many other choices that are fundamentally incompatible. The hard part is figuring out which are compatible and which are which are the hidden traps.

The problem is that while your conscious mind has patterns in place based on having a solid social structure, your DNA is the truly long term life form with it's own ideas on continuing, expanding and improving itself. It controls things on a more autonomous level and you are just a bit player to it. So your conscious mind which is a thin veneer over your nearly fully autonomous subconscious self has to work hard to over ride instinctual attractions for the sake of better long term planning.

If you understand how the different systems controlling you function and interact, life is much easier and you can understand what is going on and how to control it. Pretending any of them don't exist usually leads to one finding out that yes they are there, in an inconvenient manner.

I agree with you by the way.

I'm 50 and I've known enough lust for 4 divorces, and had real chemistry with only one woman for 20 years. I can't imagine ever loving anything like I loved her.

Yes I'm married, yes I love her, but it is a different chemistry. Our life experiences are very similar, and we have built from there a great relationship. She thinks I am sexy, so obviously the poor girl is blind.

My first wedding was 500 people. Had no say in it as my Mom and Dad had to have a BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING. Hotel reception...was OK other than I had no fun due to the sheer number of people, most of whom I didn't know.

My second wedding was small...100 people at my MIL's vacation rental property in Laguna Beach. My wife to be, her Mom and I cooked a 4 course meal for the 100 people. Prepped everything the day before and had a couple of hired hands to pop everything in the oven day of.

Saved a ton....had a fucking blast...only close friends and family.

Spending a lot is nuts....

Been together since and have a marriage that I would never give up for all the $$$ in the world. Marrying the right woman is more of a reflection of knowing yourself than anything else. I learned a lot after my divorce of the first one.

I've got ALL KINDS of family. Three very big branches (obviously one is a 'step' but that makes NO difference) with multitudes of cousins. All over Western Canada. Some into the States.

When My Lady and I got married, we eloped. But we did it the smart way. My Mother was there/invited, as were her parents. One particular set of Aunt and Uncle (whom didn't have any children of their own - but had been MORE than parents to me through my life) Took place at my Best Man's house, and one of my best friends Officiated. (Licensed for a day and everything). It was done, great, simple, and realistic.

The next day we were married, and WEREN'T 20 grand in the hole. Though, the fact that we "were robbed" by the bank on the way to the hotel is a truly memorable story. So our 'honeymoon' was postponed because they took all our money (Wedding was on a Saturday evening) and bank wasn't open until following week.

Just see a JP, and then send out notices after the fact. It's the 'getting it done' that's important. Not in any way the 'hey, look at me/us'.... that is for shallow and simple people who need attention and hugs.

==how to make friends and influence people, eh? HA.

My girl dragged me to one of her friends from collage weeding about five hours away (overnight trip) and the reception was also bone dry and to make matters worse the hotel bar was closed for renovations.....I am not a alcoholic, but I do enjoy a drink or few to take the edge off especially at a weeding I didn't want to be at.......LOL

Most of the time it's because somebody that matters to you wanted you to share something important in THEIR life. You gave them a gift of you, your time, and affirmed their importance to you and yours to them. That's how you find out who your real friends are.

I'll drink to this. My Bride and I were married in my Parents' front yard. Had spaghetti for dinner and had the best time of my life.

Who gives a shit if you serve cheese slices. The people make the event, not the food.

Could have been bacon and eggs and I would have gone. Aint the food that makes the marriage. Some of the best times are the ones that you do without. If you love your girl and she loves you back you are already a rich man.
