The most important thing to do to protect yourself from falling prey to any tactics that may be used to wrongly implicate you in a crime, make sure to keep this ONE key thing in mind as you are dealing with detectives and interviewers:

These guys are only there to benefit their own careers by getting you to sign these documents in as short time as possible. NO MATTER how much they say that they are on your side, "know that deep down" you are a good dude, "understand" why you did the deed, and other sweet-talk attempts, what they are REALLY thinking is: "I want my raise and promotion, and let's get this guy to cave in as fast as possible because I rather be spending time with my wife / mistress in a posh restaurant than be stuck in this miserable gray room all day."

I know a guy they questioned/detained for over 7 hrs. When they let him go they still did not know what his voice sounded like. He would write lawyer, over an over,....Do not play their game you will lose, even if your innocent,....
