Researching a 224 Valkyrie bolt gun

Plan is to get a Remington 700 blue printed action and a barrel to yet be determined

My main question is the chassis. I like the look of the Macmillan A6 or the Bravo by KRG.

Do I really need to spend $1500 on a chassis or will these 2 work?

(I am not an operator, and my life will Likely never depend on this gun but I do like tiny little 5 shot groups.)

Any other build suggestions are welcome.

In my reading the author talked about just getting a compatible bolt face. Is that not the case?
In an ar15 it’s a simple bolt swap, in a savage it’s a simple bolt head swap, for a rem700 footprint something like a bighorn origin is the same savage style bolt head swap.

In a regular rem700 you either have to have a .384” 223 bolt opened up, have an aftermarket ptg bolt with the correct face diameter fitted to the action by a smith or you need to be lucky and find one of the few actions Remington released in the 6.8 spc.

Something like the bighorn origin action is the easy button for a bolt action valk if you want rem700 stock and trigger comparability.

Any gunsmith (worth their salt) should be able to bush a .308 bolt face down to PPC dimensions, and install a new extractor (or open a .223 bolt face up, as spife mentions; must have hit "post" at the same time).

As to chassis, the Bravo will work fine, and is (IMHO) a nice hybrid choice between the feel of a traditional stock, and the versatility/adjustability of a chassis system. Don't let the price fool you, @Massoud and crew came up with a really ingenious design that fits those two criteria, and at a price point that allows just about anyone from newbie to experienced tactical shooter afford.

ETA: As Spife mentions, an Origin action is another option (the one I am currently having a .224 build completed on). My mind set was that if the Valk ends up being a flash in the pan, I can always swap out the bolt head for either a Mag short action, or one of the two standard short action bolt faces, and not be stuck with an action tied to a unique/obscure bolt face. It'll cost more than cannibalizing a 700 action (which after gunsmith costs, doesn't save much), but has a bit of insurance built in, going the Origin route.

Take this info from someone that has done it and wont ever do it again. The money you are about to spend on a Rem700, blueprinting/truing, PTG 6.8 bolt fit to your rem700 and headspace to your new barrel. You will need to purchase a scope base if you dont have this action already....

IT will be cheaper to buy a Bighorn Origin with their 224V bolt head. Thats a fact. You will also get side bolt release, threaded bolt knob, interchangable bolt heads, nitride coating, 20moa scope base all for the same or cheaper money than you would pay for that Rem700 and it still wouldnt be as nice....

Just trying to help you out.

There’s a lot of less expensive chassis options to consider.
XLR element which I really like.
KRG bravo which I plan try and has great reviews.
For more expensive chassis options MDT, KRG and XLR would be where I first look.

The origin mentioned above is good advice.
It with a button rifled pre fit in a decent chassis or stock will certainly not let you down and is easily changed to other calibers if you wish.

Listen to padom. This is good advice.

I hate to say it, but this is why savage rifles are a better diy build option. Sure you can have a smith do it but you’ll be waiting for someone to do the work for you. Ptg does offer a 6.8 bolt but they sure don’t give them away.

The bighorn origin is the best option out there,

You can find some Remingtons for sale in 6.8, there are few floating around.

But the Bighorn Origin is fire and forget, and one of the cheapest custom actions out there. It's flexibility has been totally understated by the higher priced competition.

If you already have a donor Remington then the PTG Bolt is the cheaper route, and should not be issue for any competent gunsmith to manage. No donor action, Bighorn.

Barrelled action (Bighorn Origin) 24" bbl, trigger tech trigger ordered. 3 month lead time. In a chacoal grey Ceracote. From Southern Precision Rifles.)

SPR brake and collar in hand ready to go.

XLR Element chassis ordered. Black. (Bugholes said the grey and black look pretty together. :) )

1 C&H modified MDT mag ordered.

Dies, brass, bullets, ordered. Gotta figger out what powder.

Now the eternal wait begins.... :)

I feel your pain...got 4-5 weeks left on mine.

Origin action, LH GT Bartlein (FDE cerracote), Timney CE trigger, APA LB brake, two MDT modified mags, and sitting in a JAE 700 chassis.

500 pieces of brass, a pant load of bullets from different manufacturers, Redding and Wilson dies, and several 8lb jugs of CFE223 and 2000MR.

Just need to order a Giraurd (sp?) case trimmer die and I think I will be set. Will probably order a Keystone barrel (with Padom's custom chamber spec) to play with the option of greater seating depth flexibility.

Edit: Dammit, just remembered I need to make a comparator case as well...

I have a few made up I can send you one.

I appreciate the offer, but it'd probably be easier on everyone if I just chuck a case up in the lathe, and pull out the size "L" drill bit and 5/16-36 tap. As you know, it's a 5-10 min job, so no sense in having you go out of your way (though the offer is much appreciated).

Slightly off topic, but do y’all think the 224V is here to stay?

Will the bolt rifle market expand for this cartridge?

I have read on here some guys stating what’s the point when one can run a 223 AI.

Thanks

Hi.
Do you have to change/modify the DBM to accommodate the MDT mag on the chassis? I was thinking of using a KRG bravo chassis for a 224 Remington 700 blueprint from DST. Will it work the same with the magazine and the DBM?
Appreciate any feedback. Thanks

I have an ARC Nucleus in the KRG Bravo and use the MDT modified mag. I DID have a problem with it, but it was operator error. If you have to do anything regarding the skin over the chassis you have to watch out that the skin doesn't move around or it will affect magazine insertion. Other than that, the MDT mag is good to go in the Bravo. Lots of people have this combination.

Bighorn Origin all the way! I have a 591 and an Origin. Love both but like @lowlight said the flexibility is just awesome. The below rifle I assembled myself and it shoots great. I used bighorns barrel nut and it just works. One thing that sets it apart from a stock REM700 is the floating bolt head. It helps when intalling your own barrels.

I apologize for getting off the subject a bit. To answer your question about chassis: in my experience NO you do not need to spend $1500 on a chassis at all. There are only a few out there that will run that much. I’ve used Killer Innovations, AI, MPA, MDT, JAE,KRG, (they are going to run out of 3 letter combos soon) and have enjoyed them all. Just comes down to preference. If you have any questions about any of those hit me up.
