My cousin is a heck of an amateur cyclist. He's 50 and won the amateur Tour De France in his age group last year. This year he's racing across America as part of a team.

He'll be close to me in Washington MO at 1:00pm this afternoon (it's a station where they change riders). Normally I don't wave any flag but Old Glory, but I will make an exception when it's family.

It’s a pretty extreme race. Just thought I’d share.

I've got a couple of local friends that are in that race.
They are near the front of the ham and eggs group.
The former pros are a couple hundred miles ahead of everyone.
It's amazing what a +2-4mph average can make.

I was an avid cyclist (300+miles a week) when I lived in CA. I did the Furnace Creek 508 which is a qualifier to RAAM. I thought I was a good cyclist and ready for RAAM until that race.

It was super cool at the checkpoint. Teams from Canada, Brazil, and Germany also came in. My cousins team was 6 hours ahead of PIM, so on the next shift they were driving ahead to a hotel for the first shower and bed in five days. When the next shift got there they would get the shower and sleep. The team seemed pretty wrecked but my cousin still had swagger and had just come off a double shift to give the other guys a rest. He’s a machine.
