I am from SC and did some work(pipe fitting) in Boston in the late 90s A black coworker and I got into a conversation about where we were from and where we worked in the past. I remember him saying he had experienced way more racism up north than he ever had down south, he said at least in the south they are honest about it, up here they try to hide it. I remembered thinking yeah I can see that from the time I worked up their.
I lived smack in the middle of those race riots in Newark. I spent a fair number of sleepless nights out the front steps, along with the other responsible males among my neighbors, with a shotgun resting across my lap every night until 'the parade' stopped flowing in and out of the Archbishop Walsh Housing Project a couple of blocks away. I lived on Mt. Prospect Ave., between Montclair Ave, and Coeyman St. This was with a Wife and infant child, plus my Wife's family worrying nervously in the home behind me, staying away from the windows, etc.. Mom lived two doors down.
Meanwhile, I was also barred from my workplace for weeks by the riots, arson, and looting that eventually razed over a square mile of downtown Newark, and laid in rubble for decades after. The only place I'd ever seen its like was 'Uptown" Manhattan.

I also learned most of the Computer knowledge I employed to feed my family of over 30 years from a good friend, a Black friend.
