Good morning!

So I MIGHT have fallen in to some good deals over the past week and now have 5 stripped AR receivers (1 upper/lower Aero ar10 and 4 Spikes ar15 lowers)

So now I must decide what to build. The ar10 I keep going back and further between 308 and 6.5 Creedmoor. 2 things I'm pondering about if it's worth going Creedmoor. First is I plan on running suppressed, so not sure I want to screw with the whole +2 gas system and whatever else for the 6.5. Also at the most this gun will be shooting 500 to 600 yards.

On the AR15s I want to do a pistol build, a basic plain Jane nothing fancy build (I'm talking a2 front sight, GI hand guard, etc.), a more modern build, and a DMR build. I'm thinking 5.56 across the board unless you guys can think of a better round to run suppressed and cover that whole gambit of rifles.

It would be exceedingly difficult to talk me out of a 6.5 Creed at this point. Running suppressed is easy and to me it's so much more versatile. If you're worried about parts compatibility buy a whole assembly of things meant to work together. Barrel, gas block, gas tube, bolt, buffer everything from the same place with a reputation for quality. When you do that you get something that runs like a dream, suppressed or unsuppressed. Message me if you'd like a list of parts/item #'s.

So do I need the +2 gas length? Who makes ar10 barrels set up that way? I found Proof and Rainier but I didnt really do too much searching.

6.5CM for AR10, no question.

5.56 for small frame unless you want one big-bore.

For parts, it really comes down to what you want to spend.

No real need for a big bore. I had a 300 blackout pistol I had built but actually sold that because 1 I didn't have a suppressor so couldn't even make full use of what that caliber was for and 2 ammo was expensive.

I've contemplated other calibers but for what I want to do, ammo price and availability, 5.56 just seems the way to go.

Yeah 6.5 Grendel and 224 Valkyrie are better long distance, but I won't be shooting that far. 300 Blackout suppresses better but if I want quiet I'll use a 9mm.

In fact I might look for another lower, or use one of the ones I've already got to build a CMMG RDS gun

Have pair of 6.5 Grendel Heavy barrel Uppers, 20" and 24", AR Stoner (Details).

Will be testing 90 TNT and 123 SST, both as factory ammo, and as handloads, and just acquired 129 SST's, brass and powder are Starline and Win 748, CCI BR-4 primers.

I don't know how much beyond 300yd I'll be able to shoot, but the Grendel just gives more thump than the .223. Like yourself, I was totally sold on the AR-15/.223/5.56 package until I saw a "can't ignore deal" from Midway/AR Stoner.

Still unfired, that will take place when temps drop below 90's.

Rather than go with a 300BO or some-such Upper, I chose a Ruger PC Carbine 9mm, and I'm very glad I did.

I went with the AR-15/6.5 Grendel because I had chased my own tail over buying/building a 6.5CM, or preferably to me, .260 AR10. I finally realized that my extreme range shooting days are getting rarer as I age into my mid-70's; and that the 6.5 Grendel simply suited my realty a lot better.

Try CFE233 in those Grendels. I just did a velocity test with it and 2 other powders and it was way out front. Pushes a 130 RDF at 2400 fps. I'm loading up a bunch of those right now with Win 748 to see how it compares.

I have CFE223 in mind for down the road, but I had W748 on hand and Hornady reloading handbook loads for it.

Thank you for the heads-up. W748 is listed as a lower temp powder that has bore life advantage. Since I'm not probing the Outer Limits, velocity is nice, but not mandatory, for the moment. At this point I don't even really know if the AR Stoner barrels are going to be shooters.

Have reliable Grendel mags finally shown up? I haven't looked at Grendel in a LONG time, but when I did mags were a toss up on reliability, especially the larger capacity ones

My ACS 10 rounders are perfect. My Elanders are trash, too tight, they're better as 8 rounders. Don't know about the larger sized ones.
