Rifle Scopes Scope base not flat?

Or it's the receiver. I was mounting my new Bushnell on my rifle, and noticed that the scope base is not level, left to right, over the front of the receiver. The rear is level. I'm using a burris 25moa steel base, the rifle is a howa 1500, rings are seekins.

So I'm wondering what my options are, it's not in warranty I don't think, I've had the base for a long time. I just havent noticed it before I guess.

Figure I could try and bed it on the receiver, or get a new base. Maybe the receiver is messed up? I am going to take the base off today and put it on a level separately to see what the actual problem is.

What do you guys think?

I would recommend removing the base and running a straight edge on the receiver to confirm that it's true. If it is, then I would try a new base.

Make sure it's true front to back? The front of the receiver is round so the issue being side to side, I'm not sure how I would check the receiver being true left to right.

I can get the base to be level, when I slide it a bit left to right on the receiver. I was thinking about it last night, and I would think that means the base is off? If it was the receiver, it wouldn't be able to level at all right? Or maybe I was just tired after a long day and minimal sleep the night before.

I am not sure what un-level left to right means.

Do you mean the base is twisted? When you tighten the front ring it lifts the rear off the base?

If that is what you mean, I have had similar problems that resolved with bedding the base.

No, that angle is fine, I verified that with a straight edge already.

Basically, if you're behind the rifle, looking toward the muzzle, the front of the base is higher on the right when everything is torqued down.

Just went back to read your original post. You could try bedding the base as you mentioned or trying a new base.

I'm hoping it's just something I did wrong mounting it. And taking it off and redoing it properly again will fix it. I took the family to a baseball game last night, so I didnt have time to properly investigate. But it's literally the first thing I thought about this morning.

What you describe sounds like the screw holes in the receiver are drilled incorrectly. You might be able to fix them by opening them up to a larger size if they are not too crooked right now.

Damn, didnt even think of that. That would suck pretty bad. I'll check that I think I have some long screws I can thread in, or I'll get some at the hardware store just to text out and see what's up.

Any chance for some pictures, that might take a lot of the guess work out. Run your straight edge down the screw holes on the receiver and base to see if they are in line on both.

Firet one is a picture from behind the receiver facing forward on the rail, second is in front of the receiver facing rearward.

A friend of mine says I'm being too anal about it. I dunno. I think I'll just order a better rail.

Your post made me go check my own Burris 25 MOA base, and it appears to be OK without any twisting or bending in evidence. Test mounting and laying a straight edge to it shows nothing looks off. I also checked an extra Talley 20 MOA base that I have and it too looks nice and straight. Had all the components for this rifle for a few months now, and you've inspired me to get off my ass and finally put it together!

P.S. If you're interested - and your Howa is a short action like mine - I could let the Talley base go for $30.00. Except for today's light test mounting it's essentially new in the package.

I just ordered a talley base a few minutes ago, or I would have taken yo up on that damn.

I'm fairly certain it was something I did. I'm kind of a neanderthal when it comes to shit. Bigger hammer, etc.

My rifle shoots pretty close to half moa, so I wasnt too concerned until I mounted me new XRS2. I mounted it and noticed it didnt want to level easily, so I took it back off and found the problem. Hopefully didnt fuck me scope up
