Hi everyone,

I was recently competing in a two-day PRS match. I have a Vortex Razor HD Gen II (4.5-27x56) mounted on my rifle. I started day one off great, cleaning a stage and scoring highly on others. All of a sudden I started missing...by a lot. Luckily they had the zero-range open at the end of the day and I was able to check my zero. My zero was off by about 2.0 mils (yes 2.0, not .2) right and about .3 low. I re-zeroed and did much better the second day...

I checked my scope in the Spuhr mount, which was snug. I torqued the ring screws up to 20in/lbs from the original 15 I did when I installed it. Everything else on the gun seemed snug. It's an Accuracy International AT.

This was the fourth match this scope/rifle combination had seen...they have both performed great up until this one incident.

Can anyone shed light on this?

Lots of possibles.

Make sure everything is torqued properly. Action screws, optic rail if applicable, barrel, optic mount, optic rings, turret set screws......everything.

Check zero and make sure it’s on. Then get a rubber mallet and beat on it. Drop it on the butt a few times. Beat it up a little like it would be in a match.

Check zero again. If it’s off, check all torque values again. If nothing is loose. Then do a tracking and torture test on the optic. See if the turrets slip or you can find something going wrong so you can tell vortex what’s the problem might be, if any.

I was thinking of shipping the scope back to Vortex for a once-over...one of the other shooters told me they would do that.

Couldn’t hurt. Though it’s alwahs easier when you can repeat the issue and tell them what you observed. Especially if you don’t know that it’s definitely the optic. If they send it back and say it’s fine, you’ll still be wondering what happened.

If you don’t need the optic or have a backup, no harm in sending it in.

That's good advice. Thank you for the input, my friend

had a similar issue earlier this year. I thought it was the Razor, turned out to be the barrel nut on my prefit had worked loose under repeated use and heat cycles. the shots started to walk right consistently. snugged back down and off we went. I sent the scope to vortex anyway, they went through it and all was well. While on the phone, they mentioned to me that they see almost no real problems with the Gen2's. Like, he'd only seen 1 or 2 that were actually broken, and that was because they had been used a considerable amount and the turret adjustment wore out. All of the other Razor's sent in ended up being fine and the problem traced to the rifle or ammo.

I guess I'm one of only two to ever have problems...

My Razor has been sent back twice for legitimate issues. Parallax issues (twice) which still hasn't been resolved to my satisfaction, as well as a canted reticle. They fed me the same BS line about them "never failing" a few years ago. Don't get me wrong, I like Vortex and I like my Razor, but Vortex saying they never have issues bothers me a bit.

As long as the Razor's have been out they're bound to have more than 2 failures.
