If earth was the setting for a sci-fi/cyberpunk/dystopian future game or novel, the entire MENA region would be appropriately named "the Outback". A haven and paradise for bandits, mercenaries, black market privateers, and traders meeting to discuss the sale of stolen battlemech blueprints...

the Congo is one of the most mineral resource rich nations in the entire world
the Portuguese and then the Belgian "settlers" destroyed that country for 3-4 hundred years starting about 1600

70% mortality rate... That is a much more virulent strain than the one which devastated West Africa in 2014. That one had a 30-40%.
And the Congo strain has now spread to dense urban centers too. Urban centers=airports and rapid travel. Not good at all...

They werent countries actually. The nation state to most of the world is a new idea. The united states is an older country than most all other countries in th he world.
