So, I just got 1000 rounds of factory S&B 6.5CM in cardboard boxes.

I also have a .50cal ammo can, empty.

Would there be any problem with taking the bullets out of the boxes, and storing them loose in the ammo can?

I had ammo stored at my folks house for over 3 years while stationed overseas. I left it in mgm boxes inside of Rubber Maid containers. When I finally picked it up I was a little discolored but shot great.

There is no problem per se, but if you toss them all in there and damage the bullets, you accuracy will suffer.

BTW, the entire doojamahickey you put in the magazine or chamber is referred to as a 'round' or 'cartridge'. The 'bullet' is the projectile part.

I’ve shot Mauser, Brit 303 that was from the 20’s that looked like it was under for 50 years.
No prob
A good ammo can has a seal in the lid
Shot garand clips that my dad liberated from the national guard in the 70’s packed in ammo cans.
No prob either

It isn't longevity, so much as whether accuracy will suffer if they are stored loose in the can. it sounds like the answer is "yes"

Its probably not “ideal” to store your precision rifle ammo like that but all my pistol ammo that i load and my 55gr fmj training ammo is tossed in 7.62 ammo cans and kept in my house where its climate controlled. My precision rifle ammo is not loaded in bulk like the other stuff so i keep it in smaller plastic ammo organizers. Just keep it sealed tight and somewhere without much humidity and it should be fine.

I thought owning more than 2 bullets at a time was illegal in Cali? You might get arrested for having an unsecured arsenal in your house
