The movie Glory is pretty well done and Denzel Washington and Morgan Freeman are sort of composites of Carney. I don't recall his character being in the movie...
There were some pretty impressive African Americans who fought in the Revolutionary War, too. Billy Lee was regarded as the second best horseman in the colonies (after Washington... as Billy Lee had to keep up with George Washington at all times!) J. Armistead Lafayette, an accomplished spy. The Entire 1St Rhode Island that decimated the Hessians at Yorktown, I think. The Hessian commander resigned rather than face them again... and was disgraced for losing to 'mulatto' troops. (most were black.
And of course the martyr Crispus Atticus (or is that Atticus Crispus?) shot at the Boston Massacre in one of the sparks that led to the Revolution.
So many men (and women... Harriet Tubman among them) of great patriotism, even at a time when they weren't included in the definition of a patriot... by some.
Cheers!
