I'm finishing up a 14.5" pinned/welded AR build and planning to reload for it. I use Hodgdon Benchmark right now for my 223 bolt gun 55 and 62 gr loads but I'm thinking that a faster powder will work better for me since I have a short barrel. How do you determine witch powder to test out? I'll be using LC brass CCI #41 primers and Hornady 68gr HPBT match bullets. I'm thinking about testing Alliant AR-COMP but its not listed on the burn rate charts that I've seen on accurateshooter.com.

Most of the speed is gained in the first few inches. So unless you are shooting a snub nose magnum the powder that gives you the most velocity will do so in basically all barrel length situations. Pick the ideal powder for the cartridge/bullet weight, not for the barrel length.

Arcomp is pretty comparable to varget. So its a fine fit.

H335, 8208 XBR, Varget, Are pretty much the go to.

I personally use H335 but I just dumped 25 grains in with a 55 grain and went to work. It works well enough to hit anything I want with an AR. Not much load development involved.

I got 25.3 under a 62 grainer as my plinking load. 2850-ish with a SD of 25. Matches my TA31RCO on full size IPSC steel well enough out to 500 yards. Done deal.
