I was looking at a New Remington 700 long range rifle in 30/06 with the M40 stock - but was wondering if the 30/06 is a dying cartridge and does anyone use this caliber anymore with the 6.5 and 308 crowds getting bigger!....

Any 30/06 love?

Opinions on this rifle ?

I like it. Carlos Hathcock's favorite rifle. Winchester M70 in 30-06

I say it is. I use it for hunting. Here she is.

I was really wondering about that Remington Long Range 700. Seems like a great rig for under 700!
I had a 700 long range in .30-06. I ordered when they first came out. It was a tack driver. I mainly hunt now so I sold it because of the weight. If you are going to use it on a bench and not back pack it in the woods, It is a good rifle at that price.

New powders and .30 projectiles have given it good new life if you care. If you don’t, then, buh-bye.
its a long action caliber that competes in the 30 caliber magnum world....and poorly at that.....it is getting further and further behind no matter was light saber fuel you put in that brass...

It still will take any North American game with no trouble and sufficiently. It will still okay in every game from varmints to bear to ELR and do well enough. Maybe it doesn’t shine in one category but will do well in any one.

Still a good cartridge IMO. Thinking about building a new hunting rifle in 30-06.
I have other caliber rifles that I use for tactical purposes.
I am hunting with one this year but I have a lot of other caliber hunting rifles also.

50 BMG - quite literally a 30-06 scaled-up! Plenty relevant in the anti-material arena, and even (niche) competition.

30-06 is one of those cartridges that will always be relevant like 308, 5.56 and 22LR - it’s engrained in our history. Relevant from a history perspective - definitely not from a ballistics perspective per se.

I just had one built with a 22 inch Proof Sendero barrel and it shoots the 190 Berger at 2896fps with RL26 and Lapua brass. The 178ELD bumps 3000fps so I would say it's still relevant and I have all the latest calibers also. My GAP 6.5 Creedmore and 7mm's are still fun also but the 30 06 still has some punch.

I Don’t see how you couldn’t get a 30-06 shooting really well. The quality of reloading components, reloading information, modern actions, barrels, high quality stocks and bedding techniques and other ancillary gear (quality scopes, bipods, etc) means an amazingly well shooting 30-06 is entirely possible to build. A great hunting round as well.

but why go with big kicking, powder hungry long action 30-06 when any number of 6 or 6.5mm chamberings will deliver same performance for less powder, less recoil over the same ranges?

I just got a new 30.06 barrel for my 1903A3 rifle. I enjoy shooting it. I have a R700 in 30.06 as well. Good guns, good cartridge. Not the best or most accurate thing out there, but it does the job I ask it to do.

More proof here.....

Funny thing......1906 called me and said keep shooting the 06. I think I will.

Weaaakkkkk..... Your dad jokes must be terrible....

Side note it's been hilarious seeing who all is over 40 getting bent out of shape with my troll post lol.

9mm Luger - 1902
.45 ACP - 1904

no longer relevant...

Better response but still expected better from you @lash

The 06 has lapua available brass, and runs very close to the .300 wm. Depends on your requirements for the rifle. The .30 cal bullets dont do well until over 200 grain, so it works if you want heavy energy.
I have a 22" barrel that runs 208s at 2850 fps. Really depends on the goal. The 06 is no slouch, and has good barrel life. Still a viable caliber.

To this day 30-06 cartridges are one of the most widely available cartridges. Is a very capable hunting round and is also effective far enough out for most people. Reloading options galore, lots of load data and proven repeatable reloading performance.

IMO, 30-06 isn't going anywhere anytime soon. Pic above does show I am slightly biased :)
