Shipping Firearms Without an FFL
For those of us who do not hold an FFL but want to mail a firearm, ATF terms us as nonlicensees. As a nonlicensee under basic federal law, your ability to mail a firearm through the U.S. Postal Service—USPS—without the involvement of an FFL is limited:
- You can ship a firearm to yourself in a state where you plan “to hunt or engage in any other lawful activity.” You must address it to yourself “in care of” the out-of-state resident. Once it arrives, no one but you can take possession of or open the package, so you must be at the destination to receive it.
When my buddy moved CA to TX he built a heavy duty crate and put them all in a crate in the moving truck. Crate and guns were heavy enough to need a pallet jack. Truck was a straight through run door to door. It did cost some extra as the insurance was kicked up to cover them. I don't remember what moving company. They just wanted them crated with the crate screwed shut and sealed.

He's moving. Sounds like a lawful activity to me.
I'd agree. He better move quick, before CA passes a law making it illegal for those with the financial means to flee the state to do so.

we have a few that have no pelican type bags so we got a foam rubber mats to keep them in the truck not to get knocked around or scratched . They are real cheap like these just not positive they are exactly the same but the look is real close .

I move to a new state every 18-24 months. Lots of variable to pin down, but I always preference to have control over the firearms as much as possible. So I try to avoid shipping them when at all possible, I usually fly them as an advance party to my final destination, ideally with a direct flight, or as close as possible. I insure them on my homeowners insurance through a special rider, so anything happens I have some type of safety there from a fiscal standpoint.
From a logistics standpoint, I usually split the collection across multiple different "multi-rifle" cases of the Pelican/Explorer cases, and check them as baggage.
