I got a little problem with my 2018 AXMC and wanted to ask a question to the AI community..

Got a brand new 2018 AXMC in 308win (from the factory) with the mag adapter. It's a real tack driver. BUT: I got a friend that did not need is 300WM bolt body and brand new 300WM Bartlein barrel so I bought the ‘’caliber conversion’’ from him. This 300WM bold body is from his 2014 AXMC.

When I do the procedure called on page 33 of the AXMC manual (I knew how to do it anyway) passing from 308Win to 300WM, the firing pin and shroud fit in the bolt body exactly like in the 308win bolt body.

Pulled the trigger and click… no bang, multiple times. The firing pin tip won’t protrude from the 300WM bolt face.

Were there any mods done on the AXMC bolts after 2014? Is the 308win firing pin assembly different than the 300WM and 338LM? The tip of my firing pin assembly is a little different than the 2014 rifle.

Did you ever see that issues with the AXMC? 2014 Firing pin assy are fully interchangeable with 2018 AXMC?

AXMC always has a large firing pin unless you order a small firing pin assembly.

Can you disassemble the firing pin from the bolt shroud and see if the firing pin can be inserted through the firing pin hole from the bolt face side? We can go from there if it fits.

Just checking: You are absolutely positive that he had an AXMC and not an AX right?

Take a picture of your firing pin assembly and the nose of both bolts. If you can, ask your friend to send a picture of his firing pin assembly that worked in the 300WM bolt.

The AXMC's used to be large firing pin only for the 308, 300WM, and 338LM bolts, but recently AI has made available an AXMC 308 bolt with a small firing pin to help with primer cratering issues in certain short action calibers.

If you happen to have the small firing pin 308 bolt (doubtful if your rifle is a 2018 serial number, but possible I suppose if the package was put together for you this year by a dealer) the small diameter firing pin assembly will not work in the 300WM / 338LM bolts as the 300WM/338LM bolts are large firing pin only and the design/shape/protrusion of the firing pin tips is substantially different between the small and large diameter firing pins.

Is there any chance your friend had the 300WM bolt bushed? If so, you'll need a different firing pin that has been turned down specifically for the bushed bolt.

If the 300WM bolt your friend gave you is bushed for some reason, the boltface will probably be a lighter, almost bare steel appearance as the gunsmith will have done a skim cut to clean up the boltface after installing the bushing. It would also have a ~0.062" diameter hole instead of a ~0.078" diameter hole.

I just got my firing replaced on my AI-PSR (Same as the AXMC) and had them set the Firing pin protrusion to to the following
.338 bolt body is .044
.300wm bolt body is .044
308win bolt body is .039 which the gunsmith at Mile AI repair shop said maybe to lite to fire but i don't shoot short action cal's since i have an AI-AT.
If i remember correctly the AI spec for the protrusion is .040 to.048.
Don't waste time call Milehigh on Monday and talk to someone who know what is should be.

Hey Gixxer,

thanks a million for this picture. I have the small firing pin and bolt body. Mine look exactly like the one on the bottom and my friend has one like the one on top. Like I said, my AXMC came from the factory as a 308win (had the magwell adapter installed also).

Mistery solved!!!

Sucks, I have to buy the LFP assembly with shroud! lol

Thanks you all for the help!

Cheers

If that truly is the case then you “lucked out" getting a SFP by default. They were never traditionally shipped like that, even after the SFP‘s were sold retail.
