Ok here is my stupid question. I have an AI rifle that was rebuilt by Jim Hart. He fit it with a 26 “sniper contour” barrel, lapped the lugs, put back in its chassis and mounted my Nightforce BEAST on top as well as an Atlas bipod. The weapon was punching a perfect clover I could place my pinky finger over at 800m. Talking awesome sub consistently. I was able to shoot a dollar bill spread at a grand. Using match grade ammo. I broke the barrel in slow over 8 weeks at the range every day. About a year ago the rifle started to “jump “ hard right during recoil. I mean the front end of the barrel jumps hard right up to 8-9 inches. I thought I changed something and developed a bad habit. I let an HRT marksmen shoot it. Several times and each time you pull the trigger the gun may jump so hard it is completely off target at 50 and 100 yards. I have not changed ammo I have not developed a bad habit, I have not made any changes to the gun sines getting it back from Jim. Does anyone at all have an idea what is going on with this. It jumps so hard it can move my death grip Gimble when it’s locked down. I’m all earsS

I was unaware of the 600m record. I do have photos and several witnesses. I don’t shoot comp so was unaware. Man I’ve checked everything and had a local Smith look at but he wasn’t comfortable working on it. I thought I’d send it back to Jim but he doesn’t sight in just does three test fires.

If it’s jumping that hard, he should be able to tell something is up even though he isn’t trying to sight it in. Have you called and asked him what he thinks of the problem?

I can get ahold of his wife any time but getting Jim on the phone is difficult. I’m sure if I called and explained he’d call me back. That is a good idea. I posted the photos in the photo area. But it’s nothing to brag about now it throws flyers everywhere at 50 and 100. You’re right I will call Jim. That’s a good idea.

So this rifle would consistently stack bullets into cloverleaf groups (all touching) at 800 meters? That is definitely impressive. Why are you measuring distance in meters, did you move here from France or something?

I spent 5 years hanging out with a bunch of guys from all over we just happened to be in France for a little while. The rifle was doing everything right now it just irritates me. I’m going to call Hart here in about an hour.

But seriously, you were consistently shooting groups with with this rifle that had all holes touching at 880 yards? How many rounds, and how many times did you do this? That is a remarkable shooting feat, to say the least.

I shoot with several guys who are far better than I am and do it consistently so I don’t think it’s all that remarkable. I just happened to have a good day and all the factors were in my favor. I fired four rounds on that set and had one flyer that went low about 5 inches. I was able to do it on the 600m target with 4 rounds.

Ok, getting 3 shots touching out of 4 one time is still great shooting, but definitely less remarkable than 3 out of 3 touching consistently. If you have multiple friends who are doing that consistently, you need to get them into some benchrest matches as they will own every record there is within a few months.

Your gunsmith un-bonded your AI rifle, lapped the lugs, and then re-bonded it back into the chassis? I’m confused why anyone would do that. Any chance you’re talking about some other action in an AI chassis? Why would you take 8 weeks to break in the barrel? This was an every day routine? I’m not even gonna touch your accuracy claims.

Sorry, the overall weirdness of your post is distracting.

Edit: I can’t resist. If you drop a round 5” from the group, at any distance, you have to count that one.

I guess I got caught up on the accuracy claims and missed the break in part. OP, you spent 56 days breaking in a barrel? What did this process involve?

Yeah I was wondering the same. Lug lapping, "chassis"? Come again?

We talking AW/AX or AICS here?

OP: A rifle picture please!

Pretty much what I was thinking. Something seems weird for sure.

IIRC, the AE models were not bonded. He doesn't specify what model he has. I admit that I am skeptical of his accuracy and marksmanship claims as well.

Dude, we get you need to get this problem fixed but things don’t add up.

So Hart is getting slammed by a Troll.

I hear France calling your name dude
I was thinking the same thing. I have nothing but good to say about Hart. But then again if the op is getting groups like that at 800 meters, he might know more than Jim. Maybe not.

The OP has every shooting ‘cliche except “when I do my part.” in it. Some of them seem incomplete or improperly used.

Ignoring the accuracy claims, it still fails the legitimacy test.

BTW, I love those “sniper contour” barrels.

OP, I don't know if your aware of this but Hart had a recall on all of their " super snipery barrells ". Apparently the steel that was used is contaminated. When the steel was being made one of the employee's droped a bottle of Viagra in the pot causing the steel to be extremely hard and rigid. Unlike a normal barrell that flexes and whips , absorbing most of the recoil during firing , your barrell is just to stiff .

You may need to fire from a cold clean bore and wait 4 hrs for the next shot !
If that doesn't work and it still hops 8 in right then just dial 8 min of left windage and you should be good !

Why is it that "you guys" (looking at you, OP) come on this site (or any other blog for that matter) and start airing (supposed) dirty laundry about your experience with a 'smith or a manufacturer ?

That's a real shit move on your part. Nut up, do the decent thing, contact the smith to give him the opportunity to work things out with you before going on the webz and shitting on him. What ? are you trying to build "street cred" here by doing this ? A shit move is a shit move.

If you give him the opportunity and he doesn't resolve the matter, that's a different story. In fact, I would be willing to bet that people here would appreciate knowing of your experience.

It's simple; put yourself in his position. Would you like to have some putz doing to you, what you are doing to him ? FFS...............

Actually, I think it speaks volumes to the gunsmith's excellent reputation. After all, the OP clearly states that when the rifle was received from Mr. Hart it, apparently, was the best shooting 308 on the entire planet. :sneaky:
It was only after the OP had it in his hands for a while that the gremlin appeared. That, to me anyway, shows how that best shooting 308 on the planet was fucked up by an apparent SHT (Snipers Hide Troll).

op, in order to help you better we need to know the level of your death grip. there are many levels . please chose from the following

1 - Michael Jackson grip
2 - Pee Wee Herman grip
3 - Homeless man and his wine bottle grip
4 - Kung Fu grip
5 - Spock's " vulcan death grip"
6 - The one and only - Chuck "motherf@#kin" Norris death grip !

Thanks, guys, I needed a good laugh today and this thread did not disappoint.

If he gets back on and starts threatening to fight people that call him a liar, we might need to ask Frank to sticky this one, some stories are so good, they just need to be shared.

800 meter sub-1-inch group, ah, good stuff, guys, good stuff. And he had it rebarreled. Priceless. And got a sniper contour, o sweet Jesus I think I just peed a little. And lapped the lugs...

The OP had a similar problem with a different rifle six or eight months ago. I don't believe that rifle was in a AI chassis. Quite unusual that two of his rifles have developed an identical problem. However, you can't fault his choice of gunsmiths.

Gees, how long did it take you to come up with these? LOL

“I was able to shoot a dollar bill spread at a grand. Using match grade ammo.”

I like the clarification that this 0.1 MOA group at 1000 metres with a traditionally configured rifle chambered in 308 WIN was using “match grade ammo”.

"I shoot with several guys who are far better than I am..."

Ok, somebody on this forum needs to fess up. Come on, tell the truth, WHO ELSE is shooting with this guy?

Ok it me, I shoot a dime at 800 and a quarter at 1000. Because it's the internet and I do my part everytime. Only a hack shoots a bill at 1000.

Wonder what kind of mileage his truck gets? It's probably "just like the Fall Guys truck" except it's actually blue and white and 2wd.
