What's the most stupid thing you've been told?

Someone agreed that working up loads while jamming the bullet into the lands would indeed induce a spike in pressure, but touching them won't. I've since exited that conversation.

I have a Parker Hale Whitworth .45 caliber muzzle-loading rifle. I've had it for over 34 years.

One day, a long time ago, I was trying to improve on the load at the range. One of the so-called-experts on everything to do with firearms was bugging me to death.

He would not shut up and asked me what caliber it was. I told him it was .45 caliber.

His reply was, "You can't kill a deer unless it's at least .50 caliber."

My reply was that I should have told that to all the deer that I've killed with this rifle.

That is more ignorant than stupid. That is how I was taught, took some time and effort reading forums and watching videos before I figured it out.

It's definitely more than marketing wank. Air rifles, while producing "unique vibrations", it's the double recoil in both directions that wreck traditional scopes. Typically it's the reticle that fails, as they are braced for rearward (traditional?) recoil impulse. The coil spring in an airgun has an impulse both fore and aft when fired, in very rapid succession.

With that said, I have run Leupold's on my Feinwerkbau 300's for ever. Not one issue.. It IS "recoilless", but never the less I have had zero issues running quality gear.

Do you people realize that PCP air guns have none of this double recoil bullshit?

That the reticles in quality scopes are etched on the glass and can't fail unless the lens itself fails?

What's really funny is Taylor was all about BIG guns and "Karamojo" Bell used a 7x57 to kill thousands more elephants than "Pondoro" ever
did. Bell even said he actually preferred the 6.5x54. But, when it went "click!" at a critical moment, he went back to the 7x57. It wasn't that the 6.5x54 was worse, just the 7x57 ammo was 100% reliable (German made) and the 6.5 wasn't (English made Kynoch).

I was at Cabela's on saturday just killing some time when I overheard this conversation between two guys at the gun counter.

First guy was talking about getting into reloading when this second guy comes in and gives some "wonderful" advice. He goes on to say that there's no point in ever sizing brass if you're just going to shoot it in the same gun since it's already sized for your chamber once it's been shot the first time. Just pour the powder in and seat the bullet.

Wonderful advice guy walks away and I had to walk over to the guy and told him he needs to at least run the brass through a neck sizing die. He kind of looks at me weird and says that he already tried the other guys method and for some reason the bullets just fell into the case when he tried seating them without sizing.
 
I'm at a Crossroads gunshow a while back and standing near a booth that's mostly full of shitty Chinese knockoff ACOGs and those GripPod bipod/vert grip abortions. I overhear the dude at the booth telling some hapless customer (insert picture of "typical" gunshow Bubba here) all about how effective these scopes and GripPods are. Goes on about how the Army started issuing this stuff during the Iraq war and how the UN had to send inspectors to search for war crimes after the huge number of Iraqs killed by headshots....

I couldn't do anything but roll my eyes and walk away.....

it is amazing how many times the head shot inquiry get reused and bastardized, yet no one actually read the report and its findings.

i can assure you it was not from AGOGs and GripPods.

Even worse to me than the "headshot" claims was the assertion that his shitty $79 fake ACOG was somehow equivalent to a real Trijicon. This is the same kind of booth that sells airsoft quality pot-metal drop-in quad rails (hello 2002) and other bullshit.

I have run Leupolds on all of my spring air guns with great success so far. Over 30 years now.

I have a Gamo thats not too hard on scopes.

I have a Powerline that bent a mount in half, while gouging the scope body with ring for 3/4" in 3 shots.

I dare anyone to put their ATACR on it. ???

@checkmate101 There's a lot of good advice regarding using your reticle to adjust from shot to shot. But you asked about converting between mils and moa. You sound like a normal person, so just keep it real for your normal range environment. Yes, you need to know how to convert both to linear. You may not use it a lot, but know the calcs. You wouldn't pass the simple qualifying test at the longer ranges at our club if you can't. And unless you are a shooting to a high level or you're shooting varied distances, use 1"@100yd for an moa, and 3.6" @ 100yd per mil, just like you see in damn near every thread on the web, and yes even here on SH. I'm sorry, but our qualifying officers would consider you high strung if you started punching 1.047" into your calculator when they quiz you on linear movements under 10moa. And they are good shooters. The only time that extra .047" matters is adjusting out large deviations between POI and POA, like when shooting a different distance than your sight in, or if you are shooting to a high level. Once sighted at your shooting distance and you had to know the linear for smallish adjustments, then use the above calcs. Oh, and this thread is full of miscaculations, just FYI. Keep it real.

And, just in case you haven't absorbed all the chatter about about mil being 1/1000th, etc. They're referring to milliradian, but no ones offered up that it's derived from the arc length formula. Look THAT up and hopefully that will help you understand the exact connection between mils, moa, and linear. Man, forget all the banter and just go right to the source.;)
