What’s up yal. So, This is what I got. I’m building a MK12 Mod 0 Clone. And im being OCD about it. I have a GM Automatic lower that is in the white and I need to get it anodized. It’ll be Colt Grey. My upper is also spec Colt but it’s anodized in black. My question is this, I can recall back when I was in late 90’s to about 2006, lowers and uppers were mixed matched (ie black Colt uppers, Colt grey lowers. I also know that the Mk12’s were built on older M16a1 lowers in Colt Grey. Were the uppers used on the MK12 Mod 0 also Colt Grey or black? I’ve seen a ton of photos of them mix matched, and some clone builds where they were both anodized black, but nothing definitive.

Im getting ready to send my lower off to get anodized, and not sure whether or not I should tear down the upper and send the receiver in to get anodized in Colt Grey now. My OCD tells me that I want them to match, however, if the correct clones we’re missing matched then I’d prefer to roll with that.

May sound pretty ridiculous and petty and it probably is, but it’s buggin the shit out of me and I need to get it right. ?

    appreciate the help guys.

    S/F
    Seth

Nice. FWIW, my mod H has a PRI mod 0 upper and it’s black. I spoke with PRI when I bought it and they stated that’s how they left the factory to go to the DOD during procurement.

Good to know! BTW, that pic above is just a reference and not
Mine. This is the one I’m working on. Obviously it’s the incorrect lower but I’m in the process of correcting that. This ones mine. I just installed the Long Collar, and am waiting for the Spec Douglas barrel to show up.

Even nicer, looks great. Here is my mod H; I sold the NF that’s shown as I want something with more mag and a FFP. May go with a 3-18x44 leupold...

bitchin bro! I dig it. Yeah, I just picked up a Spec M4A1 Block 2 upper for my next build. I’m gonna leave the fixed A1 stock on my MK12 and throw the SOPMOD on the Block 2. The whole “clone” thing is an expensive habit..... ?

Thanks, man!! We both have a severe case of Clonavirus
    There is no cure...

    My block 2 (14.5” no markings/pin/weld) and Mk18 mod 1 on form 1 lowers.

Yup!! That Mk18 is the next in line. Between the AR’s my favorites are the MK12 Mod 0 and the Mk18 hands down.

wpuld have already built that Mk18 is the Communist Republic of Kalifornia didn’t make owning an SBR such a PITA. Basically a completely useless single shot Pistol once you’re done making it “compliant”....

Nice, I wasnt too picky with the lowers I used a US property marked M4A1 lowers for mine

yeah I just had 2 of the Ops in long collars show up. Had the shorty on there before. Douglas barrel should be here in a couple weeks too, and lower back to me in 6. Also, got an old USMC inventory pelican case for it with the foam cut outs and a Log Book compliments of @m1marty It’s getting there.

nice bro! Yeah I just got into the “clone” thing with the MK12 Mod 0, then I picked up an Upper for the Block 2 last week. I’m already thinking about the Mk18 next.

I guess you could say it’s getting pretty serious......... ??
Good Choice, I like my mk18 but im not gonna lie Im favoring my URGI super duty more

That's an awesome lower! I assume it was an 80% and then stamped with the markings? It looks great, I'd love to get a Hydramatic lower like that!

I went with one of the new Colt M16 commemorative lowers for my build. The upper is one of the originals that 5th group sent to PRI. I still need to send the lower in to be painted the same tan color. I hope these pics show up:

dude that super cool .A lot of history on that upper. What’s it all about right there!

I came up on an M16A1 stock with the rack # still on it that I thought was cool and you have the whole upper. Pretty slick man!

The "real" Mk 12's had Colt gray anodized M16A1 lowers with black anodized M4 uppers, mostly produced for Colt, but a few from Armalite, as previously mentioned.

Thank you man. That’s what I needed to know ??

    Borrowed:

The rifles were issued as a kit in a Pelican 1700 case with cutouts. The kits included the rifle with suppressor, optic, bipod, an Eagle TAS-1 UMSS sling (unobtanium and also absolute crap), with a Dewey 1-piece cleaning rod plus Otis cleaning kit, and a cutout for magazines. An operator's manual was also included, however these have not been officially released for public consumption. However, the manuals are out there, and some companies building Mk12 uppers include one. Whether these are official .mil operator's manuals or specially made is currently unclear as the manual itself still contains language that it is not for distribution.

    - Alternate .mil-spec parts due to NFA, NLA parts, or changes in name/markings for current production in [brackets]

    - Extra notes about parts or availability are in (parenthesis)

    LOWER
Lower receivers were standard across the SPR/Mk12 variants and the only variations would be between grips, stocks, and buffers. Most were marked either Colt or GM Hydramatic. All other parts were the same in regards to the lower parts. One caveat is the trigger, as the program originally selected the Knight's Armament 2-stage Full Auto Match trigger. Later on, some issues regarding negligent discharges occurred, and Geissele SSF triggers ultimately found their way into the Mk12 family. Whether 100% of all Mk12s eventually received the Geissele trigger isn't clear, so either is acceptable.
    • Lower: M16A1 pattern [Nodak Spud NDSA1 or 80% re-profiled/finished/engraved]
    • Trigger: Knight's 2-Stage Full Auto Match Trigger or Geissele SSF [KAC semi-auto Match or Geissele SSA/SSA-E]
    • Grip: A1, A2, ERGO Original
    • Stock: Originally issued with A1 stocks, both solid D and trapdoor E types; as A1 stocks dwindled, A2 were used; ModH rifles rebuilt with Ace SOCOM stocks
    • Small parts: Standard M16A1 parts
    UPPER
The upper receivers, which ultimately differentiate the four variants of the Mk12, have the most variation between each other.

    Early SPR/Mod0

    • Upper: Colt, Diemaco, or Armalite marked, flat top, M4 feed-ramps
    • Barrel: Douglas 416r SS, 18" SPR contour, 1/7 twist, flats milled for PRi FSB (Compass Lake, Centurion Arms, High Caliber Sales, and PRi can all supply barrels that meet the appropriate spec minus FSB flats)

    • Handguard: Precision Reflex Gen I carbon fiber free-float Handguard, rifle length (identified by button-head screws and one vent hole near barrel nut on lower half; no heat shields)

Here’s another link and if you go to their home page, they have specs on the other various clone rifle builds as well.

@HogsLife, have you been able to track down the correct bore guide for your kit? I have no idea who originally produced them and I don't think they were commercially available. I recently found an original one, I've been thinking about using it as a model for a run of reproductions.

Not original. My buddy shot me over this Gun Slick Bore Guide and said to get it re anodized. It would be close.

If you have an original, I would absolutely use it as a mold to make some more.

I asked a buddy who works in a CNC shop, he said it wouldn't be too hard to reverse engineer these things. I'll ask him how much it will cost, if it's reasonable I'll probably do a small run. I'll keep you guys posted on any progress

for sure man. I down for a couple and I know some others that’ll be up for em as well @m1marty

You know what bugs me about this, and this isn’t exclusive to yours, is the fact that the scope rings bridge the receiver and handguard. That’s usually a huge no no.

I betting the 1 piece PRI rail that extends from the receiver to the end of the hand guard solves whatever issues that “bridge” would normally cause.

    I've still got that lower...

You know, that is the pre-"Mod 0" version, pure "SPR".

You see the handguard nut? Way different than the PRI Mod 0 handguard nut. There's lead shot under each of those small Allen screws in the handguard nut. I was glad when they went to the Mod 0 design. And thrilled beyond words with the Mod 1 changes.

Anyone got a line on a gen III PRI hand guard? Optics Planet seems to be the best price I can find at $282

PRI offers discounts to qualifying career fields, and also runs sales on holidays. Optics Planet prices are good, but it might be cool to have the handguard this year.

I'm an essential (hydraulic crane) operator. Think I'd qualify?

Good timing for my stimulus check to show up...

They usually do 10% on holidays unless it has changed, and ship fast. The most recent thing I ordered from optics planet was in December. I am still waiting on it.

MK12 cloning is fun. The Mod 1 and “Mod H” are definitely the easiest ways to go. Finding all the A.R.M.S. Parts for a Mod 0 is difficult and expensive.

yeah you’re right. Thanks for reminding me Shipping is taking an eternity with Optics Planet right now. I just cancelled that order and ordered the stuff through PRI. Their shipping is typically pretty fast.

Good choice. I started with a Mod 0 clone but ended up with a Mod 1. This is the only rifle I have copied. Just something about it.

love it! Yeah my first clone (just finished) was the Mod 0. Almost done with my Block 2. These parts I just ordered are for a Mod 0 / H-ish build. Basically a Mod 0 with a 16” barrel or the H but with the full length rail. Should be a cool little rifle.
