Looking to build a hunting rig and thought I’d give a chassis another chance. Any reason not give it a nod. Building off a Rem 700 LA. I know the bravo is a good stock but I like the oryx in every way much more. Granted I say this sight unseen.
I just picked one up for my Tikka t3x lite in 308. I'm very happy with my purchase I don't see any downsides to using it for a hunting rig aside from maybe weight. That said it really isn't all that heavy.
A bravo would be around 3lbs unloaded while the oryx would be over 4lbs no mag. That may not matter if you are hunting out of a stand, may or may not matter if you are doing some hiking with it. It's all personal preference. I hunt in the east so not much climbing mountains or stalking game, so the weight doesn't impact my hunts whatsoever.
The chassis is 4.2 lbs so not terribly heavy, but a little more than what I would have thought just looking at the statistics. Aside from that is looks like a nice set-up for hunting and basically you should have a "drop-in" situation once your barreled action is ready to go!
I have shot one in a short action configuration and it was nice.
If you want chassis/AR ergonomics, as opposed to stock ergonomics, and you want it to be lightweight, get the XLR Element V3 out of magnesium with the carbon accessories. It’s the second lightest adjustable-cheek stock out there, period, (at less than half the cost of the lightest) and furthermore it’s lighter than the overwhelming majority of fixed-cheek stocks.
See the aesthetics are what turn me off on the bravo.
If I could find someone to do the buy 1 get 1 50% on the magnesium xlr I probably would. It’ll be home to a 300 wsm so a little weight isn’t a deal breaker.
Can those of you with an Oryx chassis comment on how much of the top portion of the trigger assembly is exposed when the bolt is in the open position? (Various platforms)
I had the chance to handle a Remington 700 SA in an Oryx chassis yesterday. I thought it felt great, but the owner point out that when the bolt is in the open position the trigger assembly is exposed through the notch that houses the bolt handle when it is closed. Seems a bit sloppy to me that they wouldn't close up that obvious gap between the inside part of the notch and the bottom of the receiver and is making me reconsider purchasing one for myself. I will post a photo later for anyone who hasn't noticed what I am talking about.
