People need to stop relying on Big Monopoly and get back to hosting their own content. The creators of the Internet never intended us to rely on a small handful of content aggregators to host 95%+ of our content; that is in fact the exact opposite of how this thing was supposed to work.

Book burnings of any kind can also be stopped quickly... When just a few of those doing the burnings receive midnight visitors and then the milkman drives by in the morning and discovers the poor saps' severed heads mounted on poles in the front yard, the burnings will stop quickly.

Based on that death toll, the new study suggests the true fatality rate among everyone infected by the virus is somewhere between 0.1 percent and 0.3 percent (without taking into account people infected since the study was conducted). No basic efficacy validations, no apparently requirements for quality assurance, nothing at all - just make sure you don't falsely advertise your product as "FDA approved" and it's all good (as a side note, you should never advertise your products that way - the FDA does not "approve" products, it clears them). Those $35 blood glucose meters at the local pharmacy will be more reliable than the tests we use to determine how and when to re-open the country. This should be fun!

I dont agree and I doubt that shtting down did anything much but you do. There will not be massive antibody testing anytime this year. The problem with the shutdowns vs. hospital capacity is that the hospital issue is regional and the shutdowns were state-wide. I don't know how to address that problem and it's clear that no one else does. I do know that hospitals in my AO were nowhere close to being overwhelmed and yet I can look 150 miles away and see that they got hammered. A local observation cannot be extrapolated to the whole country, and that holds true for all sides.

I do believe that the shutdowns slowed progression of the disease. That is basic fucking common sense that is immediately obvious to a middle-grade biology student, and if you want to think less of me for holding such a believe, then I'll just have to keep loving life without your approval. It'll be tough, but I'll somehow manage.

It's impossible to know too what extent social-distancing helped since we have sparse, poor-quality testing, we have people that want to manipulate the reporting of the testing to advance various agendas, and we have people that lack the ability to understand the data and/or won't believe the data even if Moses himself chiseled it onto a stone tablet. And so we're stuck in a stalemate. Nice job, America :sneaky:

With careful sampling, such extrapolation is often possible. I know that political polling got a bad name after 2016, but it's actually an example where conclusions can be drawn with substantial confidence.

The problem in this case is that we don't have the sort of quasi-static conditions as with political matters. The disease progresses along many paths - geographical, societal, racial, demographic. The sampling probably needs to be performed with different criteria than, say, polling for the local mayoral contest. And the test needs to be valid.

So, it's possible to infer big conclusions from small samples, but if those conclusions aren't back up with open disclosure of the sampling method and the resultant confidence interval, it's probably not valid.

I agree......... Been studying the Chinese in Wuhan. Not 100% of the population came down with the illness. How come they did not come down with it? As far as the Big Pharma goes, obviously there is no $$$ in finding a natural cure.

From the get go, you had an entire group of people that believed and a group that denied. The same groups split down the middle on "stay-at-home" orders. The believers stayed home. The deniers went on with business. Couldn't we have done all of this without gov't intervention? Those that wanted to work, go work. Those afraid to work, just bundle up in your PPE. Those afraid to go outside, stay inside. Those wanting to go outside, go outside. Those wanting to wear mask, wear them. Those thinking it is stupid, then don't wear mask. Those wanting to sit down at a resturant, do it. Those too afraid, don't! Isn't that what really happened anyway? Well, except some business were told, open your doors you go to jail. Those people took their gov't money and sheltered, and another group, found other temp jobs. Again, this could have all been done without striping our liberties and tanking our economy!

100% infection is nearly impossible, even without a lockdown. You've got this random interaction between individuals, random interactions between the virus within the individuals... enough uncertainty that the infected rate becomes asymptotic. And that's without a lockdown, which Wuhan most certainly employeed (welding apartment building doors shut is how the pros do things).

Note that I am *not* in any way claiming that China lacks a cure or vaccine for this illness. They had a head-start by virtue of studying the stuff in a lab for months or years before it escaped, and they lack certain regulatory barriers when it comes to testing potential drug candidates. In all likelihood, they have more than a clue as how to shut down this bug.

As a libertarian, I fundamentally in agreement with this approach. There just needs to be a system of checks and balances, that's all; some consequences for stupidity (and the stupidity runs deep in both directions on this topic). Stay at home? Fine; you might not get a paycheck from your employer, and you're not gonna collect one from the taxpayers. Go out into the world, get sick, and spread that shit around? Fine; you're paying for related health care costs out of your own wallet, and might be subject to civil or criminal penalties if you behave recklessly.

I can hear the squealing already from both sides :LOL:

None of this is new to some of us.
Irresponsibility when corporate money is to be made, after around 1946, has been a down hill slide to the bottom of the septic tank.
Leadership failures went unchecked and compounded.
Education was destroyed so people could not see, and discouraged so innovative investigators didnt find those glitches mentioned. Or find solutions.
And big corporate smashed any criticism to keep the ball rolling in their favor OR paid scientists to further their goals.
B4 all this got cranked hot, medical people already knew that different races of peoples had different evolutionary characteristics based on where they came from. America, the melting pot, knew the challenges and for a short period of time met them.
Then failed as corporate greed took over.

New paitent zero in the US discovered yesterday. The first China Virus death in the US is now February 6th. Stuff been with us a long time men. If this is the case it opens up a lot more questions.

This is supposedly the first death. Confused myself. Posted before I thought. I didn't back check the first confirmed case in January of the china man who come back from wuhan. Changes nothing then. Thinking about it now, In reality it doesnt really matter when or where it still wouldnt change what has happened or is happening now I suppose.

Yeah, I think you're correct.

I haven't seen a full accounting of the states' revenue situation since mid-March, but I gotta imagine that most states aren't getting shit for income other than liquor taxes and lottery sales. Plenty of states were already in trouble even in a booming economy <cough>Illinois, so we're probably not many weeks away from finding out what happens when a state throws in the towel.

They are in process of signing up to print another half trillion dollars. That's almost 8 trillion dollars in less than a month.
When the country was Already $22 trillion in debt. Plus the unfathomable unsecured liabilities of another $75 trillion or so. Funny money backed up by the GDP which just went into the shitter.
25 million on unemployment. 45 million on welfare, food stamps and SSDI. 30 million in retirement. That doesn't leave many to support the pyramid!!!
