AK bolt hold open mag followers

So I've almost got the AK ready for pops with a red dot and mount, but one last thing I'd like to do is make sure he gets a bolt hold open on an empty mag. He really likes that on my rifles so as I look into this for AK mags I have repeatedly come across the Weapon Tech bolt hold open followers to upgrade standard AK mags. There are a couple of companies making mags from scratch with followers as well. Anyone have experience here using either? Thanks Hiders

I don't have those followers, but as soon as you remove the magazine, the bolt will slam shut. If that isn't a big deal, these will probably work. If he's looking for something that will keep the bolt open as he reloads, these will not do it. You could combo these modified magazines with the Krebs safety to kinda do that, as the Krebs safety have a notch which can be used to stop the bolt from travelling forward. He would need to turn the safety so that the bolt handle is in the cut slot of the safety which would prevent the bolt from going forward

What good are those followers? Why would you want the enertia of a falling bolt going on as you're trying to accomplish a mag change, especially for ZERO GAIN?

You can feel when the last shot is taken on an AK. No need for a mag that simulates poorly a bolt hold open. These followers also make the magazine harder to get out of the rifle. Of course if that is what you are after, I have only read that the followers you asked about work.

There are surplus magazines that do this as well without replacing anything, I think they are Yugoslavian. Easily recognized by by the squared off follower where regular followers are rounded.

They work well and may be harder to remove, but I have never noticed the minor difference as AK mags are pretty much getting ripped out anyhow. Of course, the bolt is going to come home as soon as the mag is pulled.

Yugoslavia did experiment with a true BHO mechanism on the milled M64 rifle but didn't adopt it. As with AK mags, fit may vary.

Yea the bolt slamming home isn't a big deal on mag switch. This is so the RO can see the chamber is clear and drop in his chamber indicator and not have to babysit his rifle until the RO comes by...then manually open bolt to show clear. They are fairly draconian where he shoots part of the year can't just slap something in the chamber and have it laying there actually want a flag upright out of chamber with chamber open.

And I got rid of my BHO followers. I thought the bolt slamming during a reload wasn't a big deal, but it's fucking annoying. Maybe it won't bother pops, but it sure did bother me.

Where dad shoots part of the year he has to show bolt locked open with fully inserted chamber indicator in place, upright flag....mag in well is ok though. In SC he shoots on various private property so it's not an issue with bho
