Rifle Scopes what is this?

This is a Trijicon TA31 Department Of Energy marked scope. Does anyone know what this checkerboard pattern is/does?

Dont know what is does but from what ive seen all the older Dept of Energy Security ACOGS had it. Eurooptic was selling some buy backs a while ago that had the same markings too.

Also, even Trijicon used to do their own shit not that the checkers was their idea, but I remember awhile ago sone of the ACOGs I seen in the Army had bible verse numbers on the housings, like 3:16,etc...true story
