Doing some weeding this am before it heats up and I look over at this brick and what do I see

I remember weed eating along the fence line at the mine shop in NAVMAG Subic.
I disturbed a really good sized reticulated python. Don't know how long it was, as I never saw the head, but it was pretty goddamn long.
This is what the compound looks like now:

Funny... I was walking yesterday and on the sidewalk was a 1 footer 5/8"diameter. I was like...is it dead? So I looked for a twig and found one and by that time with my back turned it had crawled between sidewalk and grass. I pestered it and it struck. Looked like a rattlesnake, likely an infant pygmy. This is about the 4th one I've seen. I've killed two by stepping on them; but this one brought back memories of the first time I tried killing a baby snake (the 2nd was smaller about pinky diameter) - they are TOUGH to step on and kill. That first one struck at me multiple times even after stomping on it's head twice. So I let it crawl off - not in my yard and a few blocks over.

I don't like snakes in my yard, but try not to kill non-poisonous. Yesterday's definitely had a distinct triangular head. So, the snakes are out sunning as we've had some cooler mornings recently (40's & 50s').

Copperhead. Know a couple of folks bitten by copperheads and wasn't a major deal outside of a lot of pain. But know of a couple others that went into anaphylactic shock and never made it to hospital.
Yep. Called my guy and by the time he got here he was gone. I’ll be on over watch for the next few days.
BUT and this is a big but, he did find 2 other snakes while he was here. Fucking moccasins. Those motherfuckers are just straight mean.

Ya, the Prime Box snake is not poisonous, it's a bull snake I am pretty sure

I was actually shooting when it crawled onto my mat I looked up and it was on my databook
Great looking creature, better to have a bullsnake at your elbow than a rattler with a bad attitude.

Was doing some work in south MS many years ago and came across a copperhead about face height up in a shrub. Plenty of snakes climb but a copperhead? Went back a little later and it was gone but there was a fresh cicada shed on the branch that I hadn't noticed earlier and the only thing I could think of was that it had followed it up from the ground and ate it. Thought I'd stumbled across something unique only to find that behavior had been previously documented.

Been chased by one on more than one occasion. The worst

Here’s a pair of copperheads doing the deal on a walking path behind my home.
There bad around here, worries me when my grandkids are out playing...

    Oh SHIT !............

I'm in Western Washington. We don't have any of those, but we do have a lot of snakes of a different persuasion.........

You can keep that state...used to be nice but total shithole now. Your best bet is head East for Northern Idaho. Its pretty sad to see what happened to the NW. Inslee and Jerry Brown's commie sister have really jacked up that whole region.

I have only had one rattle snake actually come after me. I tripped over it on a trail hunting desert quail in Az at a run.
It was mad and followed me for about 6 feet while I crawled backwards and continued to strike at my combat boots. My shotgun went flying in the tumble.

My hunting buddy finally got in position to shoot it.

Never had a rattler since or before do anything besides stand it's ground or slither off.

Cotton mouths are a different thing.

Choot um! Every snake is a dangerous snake to me. Kill them all.....better safe than sorry.
That used to be my mantra as well. I still feel bad about killing a speckled king snake a few years ago. They kill poisonous ones. But it was dusk and all I saw was a snake coiled up and shaking it's tail (heard nothing) and then it struck at me....well, that was it. Crowbar to head a few times. Then I realized after it was dead and I got a look at it's belly it was a king snake, about 3 feet long. Those I'm okay with...out it the yard - come in my garage or house......well, if I know it's a king snake then I'll sweep it out; but otherwise I'm going to smash it.

I have rattlesnake problems at my house. About 3 years ago one killed my dog. I have to be very careful going in the back door or out buildings. I havent had one yet this year, but usually kill 4 or 5 every year. Other than chicken snakes, they compete for the eggs or the rattlers, I give the rest a pass.

Ima do some Rattlesnake hunting this year east of town.

Need a nice hat band or two.

Leave the bullsnakes alone. They are good to have around.

A good rattler is a dead one IMAO.
Working to intubate and give anti-venom to an 8 yr old will invigorate your hate Of em.

Kid did well, but it was fuckin spooky.
Im fierce as shit when its going down, but later I think about it and it hits like a ton of bricks.

Just and FYI, apparently they make a vaccine for rattlesnakes and dogs. I don't know how it works. Since at the moment I'm dogless :( I haven't looked into this anymore.

She had the shots. She was bit more than 4 times in the face. The vet said it was to much to close to the brain. So now they are marked for death!

    Thanks

it was most likely a mojave rattler. they are aggressive and will give chase. they have made it out to the western part of texas now

yes, they do make a vaccine. i kept my border collie up on his boosters for it. it will help them survive a bite. typically, if they get bit on the head, they can live. other places and its tougher. luckily, mine never got bit and he died of old age.

BUT, i saw the biggest rattle i ever saw crawl out of a brush pile about 30 seconds after my dog was sniffing around it. i grabbed him real quick because shot or not, that rattlesnake would have killed him. i was too busy trying to save the dog to kill the snake and he got down in a hole somewhere first.

Ahh, that explains the vaccine and such. I'm truly sorry your dog died from a snake. Yeah, I'd be killing them all too.

I can't tell from the pic that looks like a diamond back but it's got green tint to it like a Mojave do you know what species that guy was?

Not sure, we’ve killed several here on our location.
I was thinking it was just a Diamondback..

Here’s a picture of one killed in S Texas several years ago on the backside of Brisco Ranch near Mines Road... For sure a Diamondback...

I've seen and killed 3 different in Az as well as eaten 2 of the 3 and only seen the plain diamond back in Texas.

I have been struck on the boots 3 maybe 4 times never broke skin so I have been fortunate.

The hardest hit I ever felt was from a cottonmouth in East Texas , felt like a tree branch whacking my boot.

Not sure how I never had broke skin since none of the boots were " snake proof"

Most snakes ever was in Az around the irrigation canals and cotton fields.

While dove hunting we would try to time shots so dove would drop on the road. Lol

I hate snakes! As kids we spent a lot of time on my grandpa's farm in SW VA. Bucking bales was the worst; snakes hanging out of bales, some dead some not. Black racers chasing you back up on the hay wagon. Water moccasins in the fishing and swimming pond. My grandpa hated copperheads the most because of bites to his dairy cows and dogs. He once ran over one with his 47 Ford pickup, held together with bailing wire, and it ended up in the glovebox.

last nite the wife took the cover off the outside grill, rolled it out of the corner of our deck, and went to ignite it and screeched and ran off the deck. a nice black snake was coiled up by the igniter! i picked him up and let him go, nice fella, no aggression. she actually doesn't mind snakes except when they surprise her.

Cottonmouths are mean SOB's, theyll definitely come after you. I used to cut timber in some lowlands in Virginia and you could always tell when one was near, the stink when they opened their mouths was nasty, like rotting meat.

I see youre from south Texas. Biggest rattler I ever saw was out by Amisted Reservoir west of Del Rio. I was driving along one ot the shore roads about dusk and saw a piece of what I thought was fire hose in the road. Stopped to move it and as I got out of the truck it moved.

The thing must have been 7 feet because its head was in the brush on one side of the road and its tail in the brush on the other side and about as big around as my calf. I was so awe struck and glad I didnt kick it it got away. Still gives me the shivers.

But the worst weve got he is nothing compared to a KIng Cobra or Black Mamba.
